Nebraska was a result of Springsteen reading Paul Schrader's script for HIS screenplay entitled Born In The USA- the highway patrolman was a direct lift- he the swapped titles with Schrader and for Born Schrader got Light of Day- fight me I was there

It was lonesome in the sense that we grew up knowing nobody outside of Nebraska really cared about it. We moved to Texas in 1979 and I never went back. In Texas, I thought 'these people are so proud of being Texans' even though it wasn't physically any nicer than Nebraska.

From what I’ve heard initially Columbia really wanted to push the new Dylan thing when the signed him, they wanted an acoustic solo album to begin with and Bruce basically tricked them into releasing a band lp. That’s the story in broad strokes.

From wiki article on Light of Day (1987):

"Schrader actually wrote the film with Bruce Springsteen in mind, but he declined. That's why he had a copy of the script, with Schrader's original working title, Born in the USA. Schrader had taken his title from a line in a song by Cleveland band the Generators, whom he used as inspiration for the Barbusters [the fictional group the film is about]. Springsteen took the title for a song he had been writing about a Vietnam veteran. At that point, the film was on hold; it went back into production when Fox agreed to star. To make up for taking that title, Springsteen instead wrote the song "Light of Day" for the film; that became its new title and the Barbusters' signature song. Joan Jett performed the song for the film's soundtrack. Starting from the late 1980s and during the 1990s, Springsteen himself used the song to close his concerts."

I'm seeing your point about the titles and the mask. At 14, I remember seeing him at the start of the Born in the USA tour when he playing a kind of Nebraska mini-set in the middle and he introduced the song "Nebraska" by saying "here's a song about being so alone you could cry." I thought that line was really devastating. Shortly afterward, I heard Hank and started connecting the dots to Nebraska's musical and poetic roots.
