when I had to take down my roof garden, I was left w/ my nano-garden on the fire escape, using every inch and railing. I'd bring the plants inside every time it was below 40, and I could get at least two jalapeno plants to last winter (warning, once inside, pepper plants will have a lot of aphids, b/c there are no longer any predators to eat them).

Smaller peppers generally seem to grow well in pots in this range (I’m on LI)—never tried it with scotch bonnets or habaneros, but with smaller ones (thai/bird peppers/chile pequin), you can often get a second season out of them if you bring them in & keep the watered over the winter.

as opposed to my ghost and reapers in Gainesville which were three seasons old by the time I moved out, and the bushes were approaching 10 feet climbing into the gutters. the peppers were about three fingers wide and almost the length of my hand. I was picking 20-30 a week.. (way too many for even me to consume).
