Gonna quote myself from Surface Noise this morning:

The DJs talk about how WFMU gives them the freedom to play what they want, how there are no restrictions, but they don't say (for clear reasons) how *skilled* the WFMU DJs are -- how they are masters of the craft, subject experts in music, and incredible repositories of information. Joe has forgotten more about music than I'll ever know. It's a marvel to listen to him and Therese and other WFMU DJs weave these shows together and look back at the end and find that out of all the strands of song and craft they have created a whole -- and offered it freely, as a gift, with no motive other than to share it.

That's art, friends. We are lucky to witness it. That's why I pledge.

It rained. They did a Beatles song for an encore.

TfTO closed the book on YES. I had a heart to heart with my friend who bought it, telling him to just face the fact that, unfortunately, Tales was embarrassingly terrible. He hated me intensely.

I love Yes--an older brother of mine turned me on to them. Saw Steve Howe solo not too long ago and it was a great show. I love "The Yes Album"--perfectly suited to read the JRR Tolkien books to (which is what I did over the course of one summer)

Here's part of a review I found: The guys in Hammer clearly had talent to write solid material and their instrumental work is impressive but this record is just way too inconsistent. The best parts are very good and the worst parts are quite bad."

I still have the show program but honestly don't rememebr much about the show. Went to MSG by myself, 13..was worried that I'd be able to get back home to Jersey when done. Took "photos" with a 126 camera with flash cubes from the first row bhind the entire floor section . A bunch of red dots except for Wakeman & his cape

If you listen closely to Tales you can catch a few Eddie Offord edits. I’m convinced there’s a tightly edited single disc lurking. When I retire and hand the time. I’ll recut it.

Listening on archive the next day. Replying to a few board comments if I have anything to add. -- The Wakeman curry incident was during the Yes Topographic tour. He thought TFTO was too padded and indulgent, and actually left Alan White to write and perform some of the piano on side 4 for the studio recording.

In the later 70s, Howe was retired from the guitarist of the year vote in Guitar Player magazine after winning five straight times. People may want to check out his recent (2020) memoir/autobiography _All My Yesterdays_.

Wakeman usually tells comedic anecdotes to introduce songs when he does solo piano tours. Has done that for at least 20 years or more.

Brasilian Yes fans started calling Howe "Caveira" (Skull) back in the early days of the WWW, mid/late 90s. Like not a few Brits, he didn't age hugely well lol

Squire repurposed some of his unpublished early-80s XYZ (Ex Yes and Zeppelin) material when the classic lineup reunited in the mid 90s. See "Mind Drive," e.g.

Atlantic was pressuring them to update to the more straight-up punk era. Hence, the overt rocker "Release Release" at the end of side one. And the leather jackets on the cover haha

@Dave M on-air at about minute 47: TFTO is full of thematic/musical cross-references from side to side. Worked for me. BUT you had to listen a number of times before you started noting all the cross-connections. I was used to not liking new music the very first time I heard it. So I would give things multiple chances till they (*usually*) clicked with me. Probably something that eventually led me to WFMU...
