Transient Waves - D Jam -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are still precious few women at the helm of record labels, let alone Indian women, but Vinita stands out as a proud anomaly… a champion of the underdog, an underdog herself, a surrogate mother to unsung musicians, a relentless workerbee, a fan, a carer, a catalyst…’ (Richard Milward, from the Rocket Girl 20 book) //// 2018 marked the 20th anniversary of Rocket Girl, one of the most eclectic and resilient small independent labels in the UK, steered single-handedly by Vinita Joshi. To celebrate this milestone, in March 2019 Rocket Girl will release a very special collection of music and literature, comprising a 16-track CD compilation of Vinita’s artists past and present, a collectable 7” and flexi disc, exclusive Anthony Ausgang print, full 20 track download, plus a strikingly illustrated 70-page hardback book uncovering the history of the label. //// Based on extensive interviews with Vinita, with contributions from many of her bands (Füxa, God is an Astronaut, Coldharbourstores, Pieter Nooten), the book’s text is written by Faber author and long-time Rocket Girl supporter Richard Milward. Beginning with Vinita’s formative years in Rugby in the 1970s and 1980s, the story covers not only the eventful history of Rocket Girl but also Vinita’s teenage initiation into the music industry: managing The Telescopes, founding Ché with Nick Allport out of the ashes of Cheree, before finally going it alone and setting up her own label in 1998. It is both an inspiring and bittersweet tale. Vinita’s staying power alone in such a challenging industry is worthy of its own tribute: she has built a record label on her own terms from scratch, she has overcome the loss of loved ones, survived a breakdown at the height of her label’s popularity, and all in all her immense love of music, her strength and positivity in the face of adversity blazes throughout the book. Along the way we learn of the hits (and why Kurt Heasley’svocal cords seemed to be malfunctioning during the Lilys’ Top of the Pops appearance), the near-misses (including a never-before-seen letter from Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers), the triumph of Vinita’s first self-released LP A Tribute to Spacemen 3, her heartbreak losing Jason DiEmilio of The Azusa Plane in 2006, plus sad revelations concerning Television Personalities’ Daniel Treacy’s condition following his brain trauma in 2011. //// Regular Rocket Girl designer Xiaofei Zhang has been given access to Vinita’s vast collection of personal photographs, letters, flyers, press clippings and other keepsakes, arranging these alongside the text to give the book the feel of a technicolour scrapbook, a vivid chronicle of indie music past, present and future. //// As Milward writes: ‘The artists Vinita has worked with over the years are undisputed luminaries of alternative music, and stand up to any major indie label’s roster: Spacemen 3, The Telescopes, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, Lilys, Low, Bardo Pond, Mogwai, Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, Patti Smith, Jonathan Richman, Television Personalities, to name just a handful.’ Likewise, the artists featured on the accompanying CD compilation reveal just how far-ranging Vinita’s taste is, and how loyal her bands have been to her over the years. The disc opens with a special ‘Rocket mix’ of Silver Apples’ ‘Susie’ – the band that adorned the A-side of rgirl1, the label’s first 7”. From here, there are cuts from Rocket Girl stalwarts like Füxa and Bell Gardens, as well as tracks contributed by friends and supporters of the label, such as Andrew Weatherall and Mogwai. Arguably the most notable track (certainly the most poignant) is the Television Personalities’ ‘All Coming Back’, one of just a few unreleased songs recorded before Treacy’s accident, and released here with Daniel’s sister’s blessing. //// Vinita began her career selling Loop/Telescopes flexi discs on New Year’s Eve 1988 and, in homage to this bygone format, she has included a 7” flexi (featuring ‘Fight For Work’, an outtake from Mogwai’s most recent LP, Every Country’s Sun) as well as a standard 7” bringing together rare tracks from two Philadelphia bands she has championed since their formation: Bardo Pond and The Azusa Plane. The three discs are housed in pockets found in the book’s inside covers, and there are yet more gifts: an exclusive print by Anthony Ausgang (the instantly recognisable artist behind MGMT’s Congratulations and Füxa’s Electric Sound of Summer covers), plus a free download code for all tracks featured across the various formats of the collection. //// Vinita’s story is anything but ordinary, and this extraordinary collection is the most fitting tribute to the label’s legacy so far: a treasure trove of rare tracks and unheard stories for Rocket Girl devotees, a comprehensive introduction to the label for the uninitiated, and both an inspirational chronicle and cautionary tale for anybody interested in the history of British independent music in the past thirty years."

Maraudeur  Es Ist Kein Stehlen   Favoriting Puissance 4  Feel It Records  2022  Donate $20+ to WFMU via Transmissions From Echo Beach, claim this Maraudeur LP Initially a bedroom, lo-fi solo project from Geneva, Maraudeur, now based in Leipzig, are an all female post-wave band focussing around the interplay between two bass guitars and cheap synths. Described as mixing early New Order and screechy ESG... drum machines, real drums, synthesisers and bass are all utilised along with found sounds to create an infectious form of blown out, polyrhythmic wave music that is as pop as it is avant-garde. Featuring members of Couteau Latex, The Staches, Purpur Spytt, Thee Agnes Muller.    0:09:03 (Pop-up)
BAD PELICANS  Dance Music   Favoriting ETERNAL LIFE NOW  Geographie Recs  2023  Bad Pelicans are a Parisian trio of Fernando Dias (bass and vocals), Simon Vouland (drums) and Lucas Lecacheur (guitar). Their earlier releases were more gritty guitar/surf riff based but oh, what a change has happened since the pandemic! This new album sees them exploring a darker, fuller sound that would easily be at home pumping out of an underground nightclub where absinthe and smoking were still considered de rigueur.  *   0:10:48 (Pop-up)

It is fun, effective, and kicks major ass. We will be playing more of this record in coming weeks! Fucking money8 There's always nothing when you need it Gold under the shoes baby run run run Always saving up for it And that voice in your head that says buy buy buy And then you shell it out For a life of living it up And you haven't even shopped yet Maybe it's because That you're not ready, homes And it takes foresight to do things like this Hey, fuck it, it's not enough. The Undertones  True Confessions - Keyboard Version   Favoriting The Undertones  BMG  1979  Ireland's Undertones were a driving force in the Irish punk scene. Much of the earlier Undertones material drew influence from punk rock and new wave; the Undertones also incorporated elements of rock, glam rock and post-punk into material released after 1979, citing soul and Motown as the influence for the material released upon their final album. The Undertones released thirteen singles and four studio albums between 1978 and 1983 before Sharkey announced his intention to leave the band in May 1983, citing musical differences as the reason for the break up.    0:22:19 (Pop-up)

Gloin  Pitchfork   Favoriting We Found This  Mothland  2022  "Gloin is a four-piece noise rock group from Toronto, Canada, known for their cathartic live sets and eclectic songwriting. Through bombastic rhythmic constructs, savvy arrangements and fervid melodies, their music spreads much like a tidal wave, positively and thoroughly flooding bystanding eardrums, the result of sheer entropic force harnessed through a “wall-of-sound Maelstrom” (Exclaim!) that is all at once jagged and sinuous. This sonic raz-de-marée reached new dizzying heights on debut album, We Found This, released on October 21st, 2022 via Mothland. For their first full-length, Gloin elected to print their waves at Soleil Sound and Palace Recording, working alongside up-and-coming studio wizard Dylan Frankland of Tallies, later turning to Canadian music visionary Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck, METZ, Alvvays, etc.) for the mix. Mastering duties were the affair of Gavin Gardiner at All Day Coconut. Firmly entrenched within Toronto’s effervescent alternative music scene, both the process and the result speak volumes as to the city’s knack for bringing innovative leftfield music to new shores. Along its deep fluid grooves and patented “noise pop” envolées, the record tackles bewilderment, dread and anger, while also overflowing with a punk-like sense of self-determination. Moreso, it celebrates the quartet’s genuine love for beautifully dissident art." Gloin (Bandcamp)    0:38:00 (Pop-up)
Mandy, Indiana  Pinking Shears   Favoriting i've seen a way  Fire Talk  2023  Excerpt from Exclaim! magazine by Megan LaPierre Published Mar 01, 2023: "The buzzy, misleadingly named experimental noisemakers Mandy, Indiana — who are actually from Manchester — have announced their debut album, led by strident new single "Pinking Shears." i've seen a way arrives May 19 via Fire Talk. "Pinking Shears" follows January's previous single "Injury Detail," also included on the 11-track record, which features mixing from Gilla Band's Daniel Fox and Giant Swan's Robin Stewart. The quartet of Valentine Caufield (vocals), Scott Fair, Simon Catling (synth) and Alex Macdougall (drums) recorded i've seen a way in a smattering of unsuspected places, including caves, crypts and shopping malls. "We wanted to alter textures, create clashes, and craft those moments when what you're expecting to happen never comes," Fair explained in a press release. They capture this on the new single, where Caufield laments in her native French — repeating "J'suis fatiguée / Tu sais pas que j'suis fatiguée" in spoken word — over a swaggering hip-hop beat, overlaid by sheets of noise."  *   0:40:23 (Pop-up)

ONETWOTHREE    ONETWOTHREE  Kill Rock Stars  2021  Donate $20+ to WFMU via Transmissions From Echo Beach, claim this ONETWOTHREE LP "The equation seems straightforward, yet it's very powerful: Klaudia Schifferle (Kleenex/Liliput) + Madlaina Peer (Noknows) + Sara Schaer (TNT , Souldawn) = ONETWOTHREE. They sport an impressive heritage but they're also creating something that's unique and proudly their own - spooky, danceable, subtle, compelling music for a post-pandemic world." Three women bassists/singers from classic Swiss post-punk bands dot their insistent, minimal music with drum patters, synths, chants, commands and joyous wordplay with their sometimes cynical, sometimes sensual take on leisure and consumer culture...    1:05:48 (Pop-up)
Es  Swallowed Whole   Favoriting Swallowed Hole Single  Upset The Rhythm  2023  Maria Cecilia Tedemalm of the band says: “Musically the writing process behind Swallowed Whole is a bit hazy for me, but I very vividly remember getting super excited when listening to the first rough demo over and over again and writing almost all the lyrics while walking to the bus stop 7 minutes from my house. Once I had the first line down the rest just came flowing. I think I had a lot of pent up frustration just itching to get out as thematically the song taps into some quite frantic and raw emotions. It’s about teetering on a knife’s edge and wanting to escape yourself and your current circumstances before they completely devour you. We shot the video for it at our friend’s recording studio called Head Cold in Bermondsey. The idea originally was to be “Swallowed Whole” in smoke but sadly the smoke machine we borrowed wouldn’t work so it came out a bit more like maybe we’re playing at your highschool under the sea themed prom.” This song is from their forthcoming EP due April 7th!  *   1:08:46 (Pop-up)
Stump  Buffalo   Favoriting Quirk Out  Stuff Records  1986  Abrasive but innovative band who grew in the 1980s from the tiny Ron Johnson label to Ensign Records, after a scorching live appearance on TV show 'The Tube' made them widely known. Invariably compared to Captain Beefhearts Magic Band, but there is a big dollop of Oirishness in there too. 'Buffalo' became a big student hit, and is sung at football matches to this day. Five Go Down To the Sea?  What Happened To Your Leg?   Favoriting The Glee Club  Abstract Sounds  1984  Post-punk group from Cork, Ireland. Donnelly & Dineen (both ex Nun Attax) met guitarist Mick Stack in 1981 and began to play together. They added cellist Una Ni Chanainn who they'd seen performing in a play with Mick Lynch (of the Mean Features). This 2 guitar and cello band evolved into Five Go Down To The Sea in 1982 with another ex Nun Attax Smelly on drums. When they moved to the UK in 1983, Una stayed behind. They released the "Knot A Fish" EP on Kabuki in 1983, the "Glee Club" EP on Abstract in 1984 and "Singing In Braille" on Creation in 1985, a unique trio of recordings which are highly recommended. When the band split in 1985, Mick Stack left for the USA, Smelly withdrew from live music and returned to Cork, while Donnelly & Dineen formed Beethoven.    1:14:44 (Pop-up)
Pure Adult  A Big Surprise   Favoriting II  Fat Cat Records  2022  The latest single of the II release. This band is quirky, weird and takes the listener ALL kinds of places. The reference points you might expect are still there (Killed By Death comps and Wire, especially their 80s period, to name a couple), but with added scuzz and something even approaching joy - the whirling synths of ‘Eyes Conversing’ feel ominous, but they also convey a sense of delirious excitement. Sleaford Mods  Tilldipper   Favoriting UK GRIM  Rough Trade Records  2023  "Sleaford Mods have described their work as "electronic munt minimalist punk-hop rants for the working class." Williamson is responsible for the words, Fearn for the music. Sleaford Mods songs have been described as embittered rants about such topics as unemployment, modern working life, celebrities and pop culture, capitalism and society in general. The lyrics usually contain profanity, which is, according to Williamson, the way in which he speaks and "not just fucking swearing". Fearn's music has been described as "purgatorial loop[s]" of "pugilistic post-punk-style bass; functional but unprepossessing beats; occasional cheap keyboard riffs and listless wafts of guitar.""  *   1:37:03 (Pop-up)

Telehealth  Taliesin Grid   Favoriting Taliesen Grid Single  Very Famous  2022  Telehealth is an unpredictable pop band with heavy nods to post-punk, minimal synth, egg-punk, new wave, art rock, glam, and krautrock. They are a two piece from Seattle WA, and they are very pleasing indeed! Also, in case you're wondering... Taliesin fl. 6th century AD)was an early Brittonic poet of Sub-Roman Britain whose work has possibly survived in a Middle Welsh manuscript, the Book of Taliesin. Taliesin was a renowned bard who is believed to have sung at the courts of at least three kings.

This tune is STUNNING...and opens with a lyrical slap in the face "This is for Zacharias Who bullied my kid in high school There's no room for you And we know where you live One day we might come after you Taking back what's ours"...faaaaack!  *

Operating Theatre  Sir Godfrey   Favoriting Miss Mauger  AllCity  2019  A lost gem from 1983, Miss Mauger is the debut LP of Operating Theatre, a little-known proto synth-pop act and experimental theater group led by avant-garde composer Roger Doyle. Featuring the vocals of future Hollywood actress Olwen Fouéré alongside pulsing synths, brass, a vocoder, and the electro acoustic production talents of Doyle himself, it's the first time a Fairlight sampler was used in an Irish studio setting and gives a prescient but alternative take on the new wave sound that came to dominate the charts soon after. Not quite pop nor full-blown electronica, Miss Mauger is a rare creature in the pantheon of Irish experimental music, largely ignored and misunderstood when it was first released. his album is a heady snapshot of some early pop explorations by one of the great modern composers and a rare insight into an underground new wave sound that was bubbling up through the Irish capital during the late '70s and early '80s. Cut from the same DIY or almost post punk cloth as our recent reissues of Stano and Michael O'Shea, this is another example of a maverick artist producing largely instrumental work far removed from the mainstream pop industry or what little of it existed in the country at the time.
