Belle And Sebastian  When We Were Very Young   Favoriting Late Developers  Matador  2023  Belle and Sebastian hit the ground running in 2023 with new album Late Developers, released this Friday, January 13th. Arriving almost back-to-back to 2022's Top Ten album 'A Bit of Previous', 'Late Developers' comes on like its predecessor's sun-kissed cousin. It is a full-hearted embrace of the band's brightest tendencies that is not only fresh and immediate but possessing of that Belle and Sebastian je ne sais quoi of a group that will always be there for you with the perfect word or melody for the moment. The A.A. Milne-referencing “When We Were Very Young” is a moodier, piano-driven number that might hit early fans a bit close to home. Murdoch’s narrator, a despondent commuter who can’t muster two shits about his prior creative passions, yearns eloquently for contentment in routine—in “football scores” and “my daily worship of the sublime”—but sorry, too bad: “We’ve got kids and dystopia,” sings the frontman, who recently turned 54. Moreso than ever B&S still have that moody magic.  *   0:04:23 (Pop-up)

Neale's second record, Acquainted With Night, was released in 2021 on Sub Pop.Lael Neale returns with her new full-length album Star Eaters Delight, out on April 21st worldwide from Sub Pop. To tease the release she’s shared, album opener ‘I Am The River’ whose minimal beat and tremulous guitar notes that splatter patterns across a canvas are like Suicide if they were given a wider palette.  *   0:08:08 (Pop-up)
Ulrika Spacek  The Sheer Drop   Favoriting The Sheer Drop Single  Tough Love  2023  London's Ulrika Spacek are back with Compact Trauma, their first record in five years, which will be out March 10 via Tough Love. The album began life in 2018, not long after the release of their great Suggested Listening EP, with initial recording at their own KEN studio/HQ. Having lost the space in 2019, it was completed in various locations over the next four years, exasperated by pandemic lockdown and inter-band tensions. They made it through to the other side, though, and "The Sheer Drop" is a fantastic first taste of the album, a swaggering song full of thrilling dynamics that pulls from psych, noise and krautrock elements.    0:11:43 (Pop-up)

Villarreal may be most known for his big style and magnetic personality, but to musicians on the scene, it’s as much for his talents as a malleable and reliable drummer, with a deep pocket in many styles and sounds. Through Dos Santos and Ida y Vuelta, he’s demonstrated a range of knowledge and skill in various stripes of folkloric Latin music; but, ironically, he didn’t really play traditional Latin music until he moved to the States from his hometown Panamá City. His deepest roots in drumming are from the progressive punk and hardcore scenes of Central America, where his bands NOHAYDIA and 2 Huevos 1 Camino were active in the late 90s. Those formative experiences are the foundation of his career in music.

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you Cheap Teeth has come to an end. It has been an amazing ride, and one that couldn't have run for as long as it did without you coming to our shows and listening to our music. We will save you the cliché of doors closing and opening. Italia 90  New Factory   Favoriting Living Human Treasure  Brace Yourself Records  2023  First full-length from London, UK quartet, released Jan 18, 2023. "Living Human Treasure was recorded at the residential Echo Zoo studio in Eastbourne. With five days booked the whole album was tracked within two days with producer Louis Milburn. For the rest of the allotted time, they explored the nooks and crannies of the building and the bounty of unusual instruments lying around to add mystical textures to the bones of the music. From the album, ‘Competition‘ and ‘New Factory’ are pre-pandemic songs which were given a new depth. The latter in particular with its reverb and lightness of touch is a highlight on Living Human Treasure." (Partial quote from "God Is In The TV" 'zine/site) Italia 90 (Bandcamp)  *   0:28:47 (Pop-up)

METZ are a trio from Toronto: Alex Edkins (guitar & vocals), Hayden Menzies (drums), & Chris Slorach (bass). "“Demolition Row” is persistent, concise, and alarmingly physical. But its punch is escorted by this hypnotizing, un-strained vocal. “It’s quite singular,” in the words of METZ’s guitarist/singer Alex Edkins, “we’ve never sounded this way before.”" METZ (Bandcamp)    0:31:20 (Pop-up)

Galaxy Heart

Constellation

2022

Released October 7, 2022. "Montreal violinist, composer, and singer Jessica Moss has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of ensembles over the past two decades. Best known for her fifteen-year tenure in political of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Moss recorded and toured with the Vic Chesnutt band for the two albums released on Constellation, and worked extensively with Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista. She has performed and recorded as a guest with many of Montreal’s best known artists, including Big|Brave on their acclaimed 2015 and 2017 releases on Southern Lord. She was featured in Jem Cohen’s Empires of Tin project, and joined members of Godspeed, Fugazi, White Magic and Dirty Three to perform the live score to Cohen’s film We Have An Anchor in various locations at Europe and the USA. Moss is also a founding member of avant-klezmer group Black Ox Orkestar, who reunited to release the much acclaimed album Everything Returns on Constellation in December 2022." "Galaxy Heart is the companion album to Phosphenes (Nov. 2021) and completes an intensive body of work that Montreal composer-violinist Jessica Moss wrote, performed and self-produced in deep isolation throughout 2020. As A Closer Listen wrote in its Top Ten Modern Composition list for 2021, “few musical voices represent so well the estrangement and intensity of our times; Moss is among the best of them.” Galaxy Heart consolidates this assessment, revealing the more exploratory and extemporaneous side of her profoundly expressive instrumental lyricism. Where Phosphenes showcased some of Moss’ most deliberate and accomplished post-classical compositions to date, Galaxy Heart quivers with a raw and searching energy, juxtaposing rough-hewn and honed pieces. Expanding the palette to include spiky semi-improvised electric guitar along with remotely-recorded guest contributions from drummer Jim White (Springtime, Xylouris White, Dirty Three) and contrebassist Thierry Amar (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) on a couple of tracks, the album inscribes a (mostly) instrumental space of bristling anguish, melancholia, resoluteness and conviction." Jessica Moss (Bandcamp)

Altin Gün  Rakiya Su Katamam   Favoriting Güzelliğin On Para Etmez Sigle  Glitterbeat  2023  Turkish psych-folk innovators Altin Gün have announced their eagerly anticipated new album, Aşk, arriving via ATO Records on Friday, March 10. Aşk sees Altın Gün veering away from the electronic, synth-drenched sound of their critically acclaimed 2021 albums, Âlem and Yol, to capture all the infectious power and urgency of the Amsterdam-based band’s famously propulsive live performances. Recorded using vintage equipment and techniques, the album’s ten groundbreaking tracks all represent visionary new readings of traditional Turkish folk tunes, revealing how these ancient songs remain eternally resonant and ripe for reinterpretation. Hailing from Amsterdam but coming from various backgrounds (Turkish, Dutch and more), Altın Gün have captured the world’s imagination with their indelible fusion of psychedelic rock, deep funk, synthpop, cosmic reggae, and more with the rich and incredibly diverse traditions of Anatolian and Turkish folk music.  *   0:51:41 (Pop-up)
En Attendant Ana  Same Old Story   Favoriting Principa Single  Trouble In Mind  2023  Parisian quintet En Attendant Ana have dazzled since day one. From the muted strains of their 2016 EP “Songs From The Cave”, to the assured 2018 TiM debut “Lost & Found”, to the sparkling refrains of “Juillet”; released just before the world collapsed around us, and which stood as the band’s rebirth and purest statement of their music ambitions - until now. “Principia” is the band’s third album and is without a doubt their best yet. Bandleader & principal songwriter Margaux Bouchaudon’s voice anchors many of the songs on “Principia”, her crystalline delivery ringing out like a bell as the band swoons & sways beneath her. The songs on “Principia” were composed from a place of confusion about the state of the world and her place in it, looking outward and inward for answers. They question our perception of others, the one they have of us and finally the one we have of ourselves in a society where the individual is king and the group is forgotten.  *   0:55:25 (Pop-up)
Unloved  I Did It   Favoriting I Did It. Single  Heavenly Recordins  2023  LA's Unloved, the trio of Jade Vincent, Keefus Ciancia and David Holmes who provided much of the soundtrack for Killing Eve, have announced new album Polychrome, which will be out February 24 via Heavenly. It comes just six months after their double album The Pink Album that featured appearances from Jarvis Cocker, Jon Spencer and more, and these nine songs are from the same sessions. Also like that one, Julian House (The Focus Group / Ghost Box Records) did the artwork. The first single is "I did it.," which keeps them right in their groovy, neo-noir nightcrawling world. “Simply put, 'I did it' is an affirmation of achievement," says Jade Vincent. "That deserves to be celebrated. Yeah, you did it. She did, she did.”  *   0:58:04 (Pop-up)

Dry Cleaning  Swampy   Favoriting Swampy & Sombre Two  4AD  2023  This track surfaced on Valentine's Day, earlier this week. "Dry Cleaning only just released their sophomore album Stumpwork last October, and now they’re back with plans to release a new EP called Swampy. Out in March, Swampy is composed of two previously unreleased tracks from the Stumpwork sessions, remixes and a demo. Today [Feb 14], Dry Cleaning are releasing those Stumpwork sessions tracks, “Swampy” and “Sombre Two.” “These two songs (‘Swampy’ and ‘Sombre Two’) were recorded in the Stumpwork sessions and they feel like good companions to us,” the band says. “They share a dusty, desolate, and spacey atmosphere. On the eve of this release we have been touring through the southwest US, where these songs feel at home in the arid, Mars-like landscape of the Arizona desert.”  *   1:12:17 (Pop-up)

Cranes  Lilies   Favoriting Loved  Sony  1994  "Formed in 1985 in Portsmouth, England by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw and named after the many mechanical cranes around the city's docks, Cranes are best known for the singular childlike vocals of lead singer Alison... The band's music has been described as "gothic minimalism", although the band have disputed the "gothic" label. They have also been described as dream pop. In the early 1990s they were briefly included as part of the shoegazing movement of the era... One reviewer described the band: "Imagine a small child singing lullabies at the bottom of the well with a background of grinding guitars"."    1:19:05 (Pop-up)
The Wedding Present  Broken Bow   Favoriting Going, Going...  Scopitones  2016  Keep losing track of the Wedding Present, and picking up at various points here and there through the years. Seems it might have been a bit of an oversight to overlook this twenty track 2016 full-length. "Going, Going... is the ninth studio album by English rock band The Wedding Present. It was released on 2 September 2016 in the UK, and 2 December 2016 in the US, by their record label, Scopitones. It is a 20-song double multimedia album - each song has its own video included - that is also a travelogue about a journey across North America. Going, Going... came four years after the band's previous album, Valentina. David Gedge had decided that he didn't want the next album to be "just another album" and decided on a format of a number of interconnected pieces. In 2014 he travelled across America with photographer Jessica McMillan and made a number of films. After that, says Gedge, it was a case of "progressing through the music, trying all sorts of ideas, seeing how they work set against the visuals.""    1:22:56 (Pop-up)

Swampy & Sombre Two

4AD

2023

Available for ears to hear as of Valentine's Day, earlier this week. It is Dry Cleaning, but, this, uncharacteristically, is an instrumental track. For a band where the narrative, plaintive, spoken-word lyrics are so integral to their style, it is almost jarring to hear a song that does not feature any vocals at all. The song itself, however, is not jarring in the least.

Yves Tumor  Echolalia   Favoriting Echolalia Single  Warp  2023  “Echolalia” is defined as an involuntary repetition of words or sounds, and this motif is carried throughout the song by Tumor’s singing, which stalls out wistfully, even orgasmically, on single syllables until they’re stretched out into an undeniable hook. The crashing cymbals, syncopated drumming, and pile-driving bassline are all familiar components of Tumor’s music...A spoken interlude halfway through the song spells out a kind of philosophy of connection: One person’s love cannot be complete for two, making the song a sickly sweet compliment to the jagged abjection of Tumor’s previous track “God Is a Circle.” On “Echolalia” the singer opens themselves to their lover, and the resulting pain feels so good.  *   1:39:33 (Pop-up)
LIFE  Our Love Is Growing   Favoriting Our Love Is Growing EP  Afghan Moon  2023  Our Love is Growing is a portrayal of closeness. It unearths our feelings on relationship and is built around the theme of intimacy with the tracks resolve being that love is universal. The track is an important spinal piece from North East Coastal Town. It allowed us to experiment with factory style drum machines that pay homage to early Joy Division and The Strokes whilst we created a lush musical canvas inspired by some of Sonic Youth’s more intimate sounds.  *   1:42:32 (Pop-up)
Bran Van 3000  Exactly Like Me   Favoriting Glee  Audiogram Records  1998  Bran Van 3000 (also known as BV3) is a Canadian alternative rock and hip hop collective from Montreal, Quebec. Founded by James Di Salvio and E.P. Bergen, they collaborated on a number of songs with Stéphane Moraille, Sara Johnston, Steve "Liquid" Hawley, Jayne Hill, Jean Leloup, Kim Bingham, Pierre-Luc Cerat and many other musicians. The name of the group is derived etymologically from Swedish liquor Brännvin, a general term referring to any type of distilled spirit. The name originated as a joke associated with the taupe-coloured Volkswagen Camper Van owned by Bergen in the mid-1990s which was said to run solely on bran flakes, brännvin and brand recognition when carrying the artists on tour around Canada.    1:45:28 (Pop-up)
Gymshorts  Love You Funny   Favoriting Love You Funny Single  Freeman Street  2022  Gymshorts is from Rhode Island and like the band’s home state frontwoman Sarah Greenwell is a petite powerhouse that marches to the beat of her own drum. Endearingly rebellious, fiercely independent, and hellbent on causing a commotion, Greenwell embodies the kind of rambunctious unpredictability that has personified some of pop culture’s most legendary troublemakers; a little bit Bart Simpson, a hint of Kevin McCallister, and a dash of Dennis The Menace form the inspirational foundation of Gymshorts’ particular brand of punk n roll, smoked to perfection in the back of Jeff Spicoli’s van. Gymshorts are a sarcastic grin and a pair of bloodshot eyes behind pitch-black Wayfarers in the back row of class, a best friend and a bad influence all rolled into one.    1:48:57 (Pop-up)
Julian Cope  Sunspots - John Peel Session   Favoriting Floored Genius Vol. 2  Universal Music  2010  "Sunspots" is a song by the English singer-songwriter Julian Cope. It is the only single released in support of his second album Fried. The album was much more raw in approach than its predecessor World Shut Your Mouth: in many respects it prefigured the looser and more mystical style which Cope would follow and be praised for in the next decade. Notoriously, the sleeve featured a naked Cope crouched on top of the Alvecote Mound slag heap clad only in a large turtle shell. Song topics and approaches included early examples of Cope’s subsequent tendency to mythologise his own life and connect it to legend and ritual    1:51:53 (Pop-up)
