We've talked about news sources here before and agreed on a generally positive view of Democracy Now. I still watch it every night at dinner, but the interview with a parliamentarian from the Linke party got me pretty annoyed this week. The parliamentarian kept going on about how the US was waging a proxy war against Russia as if the US were the agressor, totally ignoring the fact that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine - I'd have expected at least a little pushback from Amy Goodman on that one. Then she went on about how Germany was being forced by American to stop it's strong friendship with Russia and how Germany should buy cheap gas from Russia. I have plenty of criticism for US imperialism (and think the US should have been hit with similar sanctions in the second Iraq war), but I really don't see this as a major case of it.

You're right on Putin, Don. And I think the last thing Germany, or anyone else, needs is more gas, from Russia or anywhere else. But I'm not sure the US involvement in Ukraine is the best thing for the Ukrainians. Though, saying that, I'm not sure what the alternative is.

Sorry tom tom, but even Gorbachev debunked that canard. The verbal promise was not to station nato troops in former ddr. And, it's not as if the US was holding Poland, the Baltics etc. at gunpoint forcing them to join Nato. It's more like they were clamoring at the gates. With good reason, as we see in Ukraine.
@Chris, I don't know what Amy Goodman actually thought, but I would have expected some pushback when the interviewee came out with such nonsense.

If I manage to retire end of this year as planned, I'll be just short of 68. When the first pension insurance was introduced by Bismarck, the life expectancy was under 65, so it was more like "if you make it to 65, you can relax for however long you live". With life expectancies way up and more and more people entering the work force later, something has to be done, which can be later retirement (though there should be differences for people who start an apprenticeship at 16 and do hard labor for a long time), higher contribution rates from salary, or a mix of both.

Germany has been making a mess of its educational system for quite some time. I think the biggest problem is cultural: that teaching is not a respected profession. Finland is not as good as it used to be when it topped the Pisa studies, but you still have to have a masters in education to teach in any school through high school, and the acceptance rate is low because so many want to do it. That's because being a teacher is a respected job.

As you know, Heidee, there's a lot of talk in Germany currently about the Fachkräftemangel (shortage of skilled workers). Now, Fachkräfte is a word you need to savour on your tongue for a while, just like Arbeitskraft (labour power). What the economy needs is various kinds of Arbeitskräfte, not exactly people as such. Teachers have the task of training the Arbeitskräfte for the economy, to keep it going and growing.
