I think that Motian's compositions were ignored for a very long time. But late in his life and after his death, a number of tributes to his compositions have appeared, including one by a band calling itself Motian Sickness. And pianist Russ Lossing has two records on Sunnyside playing his compositions. And there's a new ECM album by Jacob Broo and Joe Lovano dedicated to Motian, but with only two of his comps (one not credited to him). FYI

John Abercrombie had that sound before Frisell. Nothing against Frisell, who is great, of course. But I was a big fan of Abercrombie back in the late 70s, and it frustrates me that he is so often overlooked.

@mic_a yes, Abercrombie is seriously underrated

Speaking of cool guitar, have tp pick up (and see) this new Bad Plus Version (saw the original a number of times, such a different sound).

@mic_a, what hyde said, no disrespect to Abercrombie. I think Frisell hit a nerve not just with his sound, but his musical omnivore approach.

Read 'This Is Your Brain On Music'. It doesn't claim to illuminate the totality of anything, of course. Did posit that our embrace of a given Music has much to do with the specific balance of its Familiarity & Novelty. As in I guess - 'this is Music' - but - 'I am not bored & in fact intrigued by it' - which is perhaps elementary...
Does make me wonder however how the FMUvian might be 'wired' differently in that game. 'Familiar' & 'Novel' being conditional of course. I suppose we won't all submit to BrainScans & I'll never know...

Frisell put the ingredients together in his own special way that melded perfectly with that 80s polyglot moment.

My WestCoast friend whose coattails I rode into Jazz knowledge & situations loves CharlieHaden - so we saw ErnieWatts. Watts made one realize that versatility ~ adaptability - as well as perhaps a non-aggressive or actually sweeter style on the instrument - might actually work against you for credit & recognition - even tho they are actually often virtues... Not sure if that applies to Abercrombie.

Checked BandCamp on that Bad Plus album. Interestingly, the LP/vinyl version is still available, but the CD is noted to be sold out. The start of the Vinyl-too-expensive backlash...???

Well, THAT should be interesting!
I saw Ribot recently with folk singer Sam Amidon, but he was playing the role of singer-songwriter, which was unexpected and quite interesting too.

Abercrombie did some pretty fuzzed out and squalling work on some other folks' albums in the early 70s, which I wasn't actually aware of until recent years. But... I've gotta phase out now. Again best wishes, all.

@doctorj, I bought the CD from the band after the concert and mentioned that it was no longer available on Bandcamp. Reid Anderson (who makes change as well as writing and playing bass) suggested that they were trying to restock, but Problems kept intervening.
