Kelbo's! Forgot about that place. during the '90s lounge revival, I DJed there in it's final days before it got rid of the vintage tiki decor and became one of those naughty dancin' goil joints.

Of course, guess I could have still DJed there, but they didn't ask...
  5:31pm
Dean:

The NON performance was billed as a tiki buffet. The PA played Frankie & Annette stuff until NON was set up, at which point the banquet room doors were shut (and secured as above), and away he went.

Cheree July: it's frustrating. Recently a sushi place near me changed decor and went tiki. Good cocktails, too. Couldn't wait to check it out. But the music? "classic rock"...

Bar/restaurant owners probably don't have much faith in the concept. And do the young 'uns know or care?

Mr Fab:

well Dean, I bravely listened to four Pat Smear albums from his obscure '80s/early '90s solo years for my old blog, and I wrote thusly:

Pat Ruthensmear "Ruthensmear" (1988) - Amateur glam w/synths, drum machines, Smear's guitar (work that wah-wah!) and strangled vox; an odd, almost random eclecticism. "Golden Boys" is the completion of an unfinished Germs song.

The Death Folk "Deathfolk" (1990) - Acoustic duo with Gary Jacoby from the band Celebrity Skin, but hardly "folk" music; covers Queens' "'39."

Pat Smear "So You Fell In Love With A Musician..." (1992) Sounds properly grunge - his audition for Nirvana? - but hints of glam still pop thru. As usual, he sounds like he's having fun, uttering lyrics like "Wicked witch, your titties drip red lava 3-D fantasies."

The Death Folk "Deathfolk II" (1992) - No longer acoustic, but grungy glammy pop-rock. This former punk minimalist is not afraid to guitar-wank as much as any arena-rocker. "Medely" honestly isn't that far removed from Styx' "Come Sail Away." Covers The Go-Gos' "Automatic."

Once when we were practicing with Shane West in my room, Lorna showed up early while I was listening to Stockhausenโ€™s โ€œHymnenโ€ lp, she stared at the spinning record, and looked perplexed. Finally she said, โ€œI canโ€™t believe somebody put this on a recordโ€ฆโ€ I pointed at my trcord shelves and said, โ€œyup. And pretty much all of these albums would seem just as improbable to you. Some even more so!โ€ She looked very confused for a good while after that.
  7:03pm
Dean:

Yeah, I know.

Pat Smear's '80s into '90s output seems mildly daring, but not "outside," assuming I know what that means.

Which "Hymnen"? The recordings of Stockhausen works can vary considerably.

I was primed for weird music as a kid. My older hippie siblings cousins had extensive record collections with lotsa prog and electronic stuff. We listened to early FM radio. A 1985 review of the Songcircle performance of Stimmung:

I should start off this review by admitting that I consider Stimmung to be one of the most remarkable musical experiences of our timeโ€”even though it is also the sort of piece that may drive a spouse out of the house. For all attempts to imitate it (it dates from 1968), it remains a work sui generis. (Sui generis = liberal with hog-calls.) The title means โ€œtuningโ€œ or โ€œmood,โ€œ but a good equivalent taken from the days of its creation might be โ€œvibes.โ€œ My prejudice in favor of this piece may be measured by the probability that few of my colleagues or readers will also have published a poem in which Stimmung is mentionedโ€”the result of having been introduced to the work by an unusual student. Even now, the composition is the most absorbing yet relaxing musical experience I can think of.

Great chat today. I'm sad I missed a chunk in the middle when I went to get my prescription. Caught myself up though. Great sounds too.
