Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 9, 2022 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

In the Les Paul documentary near the end of his life, he's doing one of his Iridium gigs and making forward, flirty, patronizing remarks about the woman playing stand-up bass and her physical appearance. An interesting suggestion. I think Django clearly had a broad & significant influence on many ...but possibly outside of Jazz in a way ? Duke Ellington @ the time dubbed him the first Foreigner to contribute something really original to the U.S. Jazz form ...Gittar aside ! & of course 'Gypsy Jazz' is a whole subgenre of its own. Also notable that Django & Grappelli matched each other in many respects...

...some titans seem more apparently sui generis - they come out of nowhere & have such a distinctive & singular voice. Perhaps partly it's that Django was Transitional - after him Gittar playing Lead Lines was much more taken for granted ? & then Amplification - which he only dipped a toe into - yet dip he did... Perhaps comparable to JeffBeck being a bit under credited for what he'd done *before* Hendrix arrived in London & swept the memory away ...well anyhow...

Again if I remember correctly, Django didn't completely lose use of his fingers in the fire-they fused, were stiffly straight, and he could use it for Baring chords or sort of like a capo. But he did have to create his own guitar style.

Martino is famous for his guitar playing, and also for the fact that like Django, he had to overcome incredible adversity. He had an avm (arterio-venous malformation) in his brain that burst, requiring him to have a good chunk of grey matter removed. He forgot almost everything after the surgery, including guitar playing. He then retaught himself jazz guitar,, and performed and recorded.
