Just got Wind Talkers on DVD and Paul Whiteman is the King of Jazz. I haven’t seen Wind Talkers, I’m excited.

Hey Sam! Question, where are all these pictures that look like gootgle street view from the 1980s?
  10:03pm
Pie:

What an entry! A+ 10 by the Better Business Bureau.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm

Pie! Thank you for helping keep DVDs alive as a format. I believe I saw Wind Talkers in the theaters, but I don't really remember anything about it.

I am glad you asked, Aaron. They come from the NYC Dept. of Records & Information Services, which maintains photographic records of every lot in New York City which were originally compiled by the Dept. of Finance for property tax appraisal purposes. Here's the Manhattan page from the 1980s as an example: nycma.lunaimaging.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm

@aaron, they also have a collection from the 1940s.

I remember noticing gas at $0.36 gallon.

Almost bought Tres Hombres dozens of times back then. Never did.

I recall 1 gas station in Southern NJ, still mid to late 90s (near where my in laws lived) that was still $0.99 in the mid to late 90s. Was very exciting at the time...
  10:18pm
Dean:

I'm talking '60s. Dad pulled into the station. Gas was under $0.40/gallon. I even know the station; it's on Telegraph in unincorporated Whittier, just west of Mills.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

It's perfect to pitch.

When I drove in the mid 70s, it was my dad's car so most likely he gassed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

Dean! Whittier...home town of...do I even need to say the name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

@WR, enjoy your cooked food!
  10:23pm
Dean:

I wish my dad had bought, say, 14 billion gallons of gas when it was $0.40. Then I'd just use that supply.

Don't say Nixon. His hometown was Yorba Linda, but he did hang his shingle as a lawyer in Whittier. He also attended junior high and college there. I attended both of his former institutions.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm

rw and Dean you have good memories of gas prices through the ages!

I am indeed the gas expert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

@Aaron...doing pretty well. Got a new jacket recently. That's been the highlight of the past few months, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

It is a used down jacket, at that!

  10:28pm
rw:

It doesn't mention anything on the Wikipedia but I feel like James Turrell has a connection with Whittier.
  10:30pm
rw:

Dean, is that Telegraph and Imperial where the Carriage House coffee shop used to be? Before they turned it into a McD? I was pretty sad about that.
  10:30pm
Dean:

We Whittier denizens try to keep track of our connections. Murry Wilson lived there. Carmine Appice. Tom Waits for a time.
  10:31pm
rw:

No Turrell? I think he was raised Quaker
  10:32pm
Dean:

rw, the full story is that the owner of Carriage House, and a couple other local joints, including California Grill in uptown Whittier, was vacationing in Greece, where he was murdered. That's why Carriage House closed. Yes, it is now a fucking McDonalds.

Whittier has good Quaker stock. I don't know of him.
  10:32pm

I DO remember gas wars. Where stations across the street from one another would compete for the lowest price.

  10:39pm

That's a sad story indeed.

Turrell is a Light and Space artist. I think he's living in Arizona or New Mexico now turning a crater into an artwork over the past several decades. Pretty interesting work (I mean, except for the less interesting stuff).

@rw, when I used to work as a gallery guard at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, I loved to sit in a James Turrell concrete structure called Sky Pesher on my breaks. Pretty cool piece: walkerart.org...

Ishmael Reed, very nice. Let me recommend the poetry and commentary of Ilya Kaminsky. He's from Ukraine, and he's deaf. I met him at Oakland International Airport. We flew together ... somewhere. Ironically, he could "hear" me during the flight by reading my lips, but I couldn't hear him over the sound of the jets.

We talked mostly about Shakespeare.

  10:52pm
rw:

chresti, me too!

Sam, Turrell has made these things called Perceptual Cells. At the LACMA retrospective you couldn't get in without reservations which sold out fast. My buddy and I sneaked into one one time (actually twice). They're pretty insane and I recommend if you ever have a chance. You need to sign a waiver because people have had seizures. Not sure if I'd call them great art exactly, but pretty fucking psychedelic.
  10:53pm

A talented poet, Sam. Well worth your time.
