Bob (or somebody at the station) played a track from that Dolphy release two or three weeks ago, prompting me to purchase it from Amoeba mail order. It arrived, but was missing the second disc. Amoeba happily replaced the set.

Today I've already ordered the Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian album, which is in short supply.
Avatar 12:39pm
Frank Zaatar:

Mostly lurking or busy on Saturdays. I try to collect all the Dolphy I can (on vinyl only, natch) so unreleased sessions are big news. Looking around I see it was an RSD release, so now it goes for (relatively) big bucks.
Caught your Spoonful show on the archives and was sorry I couldn't kibbitz. Very enlightening show.

I work mere blocks from the Berkeley store, but I haven't been there in ages. Word has it that the one to visit is the Hollywood store. Naturally, it opened the year after I moved north. If you do come to the Bay Area and you get to Amoeba, make sure you head north to El Cerrito to visit Down Home, Chris Strachwitz's gem of a store.
  12:46pm
Dean:

Frank Zaatar: Your account echoes that of a father of one of the girls on my daughter's soccer team. I mentioned I'd picked up the Dolphy set on CD. "I have it on vinyl," he replied. He, too, collects vinyl exclusively.

There's a vol. 2, but both are CD.

@Dean: I pretty much only listen to jazz on vinyl. I got back into vinyl years ago when I got a CD player and realized I should invest in analogue.
  12:53pm

I never left vinyl. My turntable has been humming along since 1983. A few years later I caved and started collecting digital, viz., CDs. I have barely dipped a toe in files, though.

I recall when digital made a leap: early '92 or so, the Mark Levinson No.30 digital processor (i.e., DAC). Heard it at GNP Audio in Pasadena, Charles Lloyd's first ECM release, '90's Fish Out of Water. A gorgeous record rendered gorgeously.

I picked up an early "high end" CD player, Museatex Bidat, in the 90's. It sounded nice, but my turntable set up was MUCH better at the time. (the CD disc drive on it eventually gave out, the DAC part sits in my basement).
