Favoriting October 30, 2022: Let's Remember Clifford
Birthday #92 for the man who tragically celebrated just 25 birthdays, but who nonetheless didn't seem to have wasted a moment on this here planet, advancing his prodigious talent on the trumpet and leaving us with an astounding stash of treasure.

⦿Sun in ♏︎Scorpio, Year of Metal 🐎Horse
' Clifford Benjamin Brown (October 30, 1930 – June 26, 1956) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. He died at the age of 25 in a car accident, leaving behind four years' worth of recordings. His compositions "Sandu", "Joy Spring", and "Daahoud" have become jazz standards. Brown won the DownBeat magazine Critics' Poll for New Star of the Year in 1954; he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1972...
Brown stayed away from drugs and was not fond of alcohol. Rollins, who was recovering from heroin addiction, said that "Clifford was a profound influence on my personal life. He showed me that it was possible to live a good, clean life and still be a good jazz musician." '...

Loving the Clifford Brown tribute, but FYI, if the liner notes to "A Night at Birdland" really say that Lou Donaldson is on tenor sax, I'm pretty sure they're wrong. I don't think Donaldson has ever played anything but alto, at least on record.

@1:37 abbazabba: New Scotland lives up to its name, not least because here and the old country share ancient geology. But the Irish and French and German immigrants left indelible marks as well. We are never more than 35 miles from salt water; where I live the estuary rises and falls 29 feet w/ the tide. I see American Airlines will fly direct from Newark to Halifax starting soon. Much to see and marvel at, not least the music scene.

Stork, thank you! It's a genu-wine pleasure to be here, and to drink deep of your love of music. Brownie was taken from us so young, it doesn't feel right to name something as vile as a heavy-metals-infused, dioxin-laden cocktail after him, so maybe let's just refer to that yard-glass of Glen Passaic as a Friday the 13th, in memory of his passing.

(Not sure why I associate Friday the 13th with Brownie's passing, when any fool with a Wikipedia can see he died on June 26, 1956. Must be the old Glen Passaic-induced temporal distortion again.)

So many jazz greats died of drink and drugs, it seems worth noting that Brownie fell to another plague disproportionately affecting communities of color: traffic violence, in the form of a late-night car crash en route to a gig. If in mid-50s America, a young Black artist had been able to avail himself of a different transport and timetable, who knows what he might've gone on to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm

Heck, in the last 50 years a lot of artistry just up and dissipated while its catatonic vessels sat in front of a television.
