Horror writer Peter Straub passed away on Sunday. I was surprised to read that he had a casual friendship with Nick Cave, who used Straub's writings as inspiration for several of his songs. Straub's website's recommendations list includes albums by Yo La Tengo and Magnetic Fields. I had no idea.

we have no ac any longer, and it was 108 mon then 107 yesterday... supposed to be less hot today (but the past 2 days ended up 10º+ hotter than expected).

My mom did dabble in ancestry stuff for about a week, but once she discovered that she had an uncle that the family left in Poland when they emigrated and never ever talked about, she was done with that. That was kind of interesting, though, I have to admit. Most of my family on her side are cold stoics that were hard to connect with
Avatar 1:12pm
Mary Wing:

In a similar vein, I don't want to do those 23&Me DNA tests; not interested in finding "lost" relatives, heh.
Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm

plus your DNA gets released into the wild for police state or capitalistic exploitation.
Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Phillippe:

I agree, Mary. Plus I need to be tracked down for past crimes like I need another tax bill.

Just an example of the cold stoics in my family: about a week after my grandfather died, my grandmother got tired of their dog whining because it missed my grandfather, so she took the dog to the vets and had it put to sleep. I really liked Trixie -- friendly little mutt
Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Handy Haversack:

Those DNA places use the promises of pseudoscience to collect and sell DNA info. I'd love to see someone manage to send in the same sample twice and see how different the results are. Because delivering accurate information is not the business model. Selling DNA info is. They are nasty companies that should be heavily regulated and entirely firewalled from law enforcement, insurance, and other industries.

Of course, at this point, enough of us have had a cousin or someone do them that the cat is pretty much out of the genetic bag. We just don't have the money to access our own genetic info. But don't worry -- someone has.

Agree.
1.) You wanna know about your family history & ancestors ? Be prepared for different narratives than you have already. The Louis Gates program illustrates some of that...
2.) DNA companies. A prime example of how we need a Bill of Digital Rights ...& I suppose Biological Rights, as people have barely begun to consider how Genetic Science will impact us - as AI has been doing for a while now (& only accelerates in doing)...

...it's one thing to form opinions about Bono being an egomaniac or whatever based on media hype or south park episodes; but child rape is a little too huge of an accusation to just assume guilt about. at no point was any proof shown. he obviously longed for the childhood he'd never been permitted, so he played with children.
this freaked out some typically fearful, hypocritical, jealous americans, so they devised a clever way to put an end to it, AND make a few bucks.

it's true of course that a lot of rape goes unreported. it's also true a lot of people get accused of rape when it wasn't rape. then there's the "statutory rape" laws, which can get an 18-year old on a child sex-offender list because he was the 45th sex partner of a 17-year-old.
- then there're people who accuse others of things for political gain, political hate, money, 15 minutes of fame, and to relieve themselves of their shame on indiscreet choices.
...a lot of bullshit.
