Music of Cuba with Guest DJ Ned Sublette

Hear this show now: RealAudio

Musician, radio producer, auctioneer, record label honcho and author Ned Sublette joins us with a musical companion to Cuba and Its Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo.

The book is the first part of a remarkably in-depth two-volume study of the music of Cuba, its historical and cultural roots and its global impact.

The first chapter of the book, which traces the story's foundation to antiquity, is at WNYC's website here. And at the other end of the chronology, an excerpt on the mid-20th century Cuban singer/bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez via the Afropop Worldwide site (Ned is a radio producer for Afropop) is here.

You can purchase the book from the usual suspect here, a less usual suspect here; or if you want other purchase suggestions (or if you need help interpreting this somewhat fragmentary playlist), send us an e-mail.
