Unpopularfred, I understand, but ... well, I think Green is pop perfection. And then there was a bit of a dip, yes, but New Adventures in Hi-Fi is fantastic. And Monster has some very good bits.

...I think of 'Losing My Religion' ...to be Alternative & also possibly Over-Exposed - no idea how one might navigate such a conundrum.
...Course to me R.E.M. are synonymous with the mid to late 1980s - & school ending & Leaving Home - & the entire rise of 'Alternative' out of College Rawk as both a Genre & actually a Culture - if not the entire Age Group in Society. So - pretty freighted associations. They went from this little DIY Surrealistic JanglePop treasure to the Charts & Arenas. People have done worse with such situations...

Just wondering, since this is on an internet-only stream, are we technically not listening to Radio Song on the radio?

True, Phillippe, but I also think most people first heard this song on MTV, heh.

Joe Belock & others have pointed out that REM had a few albums' worth of their material already in hand before they started actually putting albums out... Not unusual to make your Statement & mark & influence others & pass on yourself to whatever degree...

Bas, I still have cassettes I recorded off the radio of R.E.M.'s April Fools show in Atlanta on that tour -- the night before (or after?) I saw them.

Oops I’m late to The Orville/Blake’s 7 etc. convo. The Orville gets more dramatic and less comedic as it goes, but it still just seems like an homage to Star Trek TNG to me. (It even has one of its most prominent writers.) A well-done homage but still just an homage. I don’t get McFarlane as the captain at all. Casting himself in that role just seems like vanity.

Blake’s 7 is really interesting, but by today’s standards, the writing is not cohesive and needed more serialized elements. One of the most prominent characters vanishes after season 2 and they barely even mention it. S3 should have been all about searching for that person, even if the actor wasn’t available. But I guess they just didn’t do serialized SF back then. Still worth a look, it’s pretty fascinating.
