Greetings, my fiends, er, friends!
Avatar 5:02pm

Hey Fab! Hope there's more fiends that show up!

Andy Breckman over on the mothership describes WFMU's entire programming as "hippie noise." This one's for you, Andy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
Austin Rich:

Good Hello! Here to enjoy the hippy music. So long as it's not TOO hippy...
Avatar 5:04pm
spacebrother:

I originally planned it as the worst hippie music I could find, but there was just too much plain strange stuff.
Avatar 5:04pm
spacebrother:

Hey WR and Austin!
Avatar 5:04pm
Mr Fab:

Few days ago, I heard "She's Goin Bald," on another station. Earlier today, Jan played "Windchimes." Now "Do You Like Worms." The Beach Boy's weirdest period is clearly experiencing a long-overdue tribute.
Avatar 📖 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
WR:

Hippy is a term invented by the straight media to enable capitalist profiteering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Austin Rich:

Strange is good.
Avatar 5:05pm
Mr Fab:

I read that true hipsters would call posers "hippies" back in the jazz hep-cat days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
Austin Rich:

I like that!
Avatar 5:06pm
spacebrother:

Excellent, Fab!

I can't understand anything Bobby Jameson is saying here.
Avatar 5:09pm

is "cutting your lawn" a double-entendre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
Austin Rich:

Lousy hippy language! All that peace and love makes them unintelligible.

Ripping off Bo Diddley was common but wonder who titled the tune "Vietnam"?

So I guess you're playing hippie music you don't enjoy? There are much better songs just as obscure.

Hi Space Brother Greg and gang!😊

WR:

I know of Jameson mostly as S. Cali session guy for one off attempts to capitalize off of teen fads. Interesting if true note on his discogs listing: "He appeared in the Robert Carl Cohen 1967 cult-movie Mondo Hollywood, along with his then girlfriend Gail Sloatman, who later became Gail Zappa. "
Avatar 5:13pm
spacebrother:

@ Chill - I think most of this stuff just imitated a style. Yeah, I was laughing at most of it.
  5:14pm
chillroom:

Cheers.
Avatar 5:15pm
Mr Fab:

Kim Fowley: proto-rapper!
Avatar 5:15pm
spacebrother:

@ WR - He also recorded early on with Mick Jagger and was produced by Keith Richards. 1964 or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Austin Rich:

So far, I've actually dug most of these picks. Ridiculous, yes, but I'm into ridiculous quite often.
Avatar 5:18pm
spacebrother:

@ Austin, Yeah they're either ridiculous, or so programmed to appeal to a demographic, or just dumb.
Avatar 5:18pm
spacebrother:

Rare quality track coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Austin Rich:

Dumb is sort of just right, sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm

So Hungry!
Avatar 5:21pm
spacebrother:

This makes fun of Hippies, but that's what Zappa did. He recognized the commodification WR was speaking about.
Avatar 5:21pm
Mr Fab:

oh yeah, "real" hippie music can mean long, noodling jamming. Feh. This is much more entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Austin Rich:

I had a friend tell me that Zappa was trash, and I've been trying to see what he was talking about ever since. Like, maybe he's a terrible guy, but these albums are just TOO weird and well written... like, there's something there. I think that's hard to argue. Maybe you don't like it, but... it seems sort of obvious to me.
  5:21pm
John R.:

I remember The Four Seasons put I song in the mid 60s titled β€œ Watch the Flowers Grow”, I guess wanting to try and adapt with the times. I remember hearing a popping sound ,I think it was supposed to represent someone tripping and seeing the flowers… pop up!😎
Avatar 5:22pm
spacebrother:

One more nice one.
Avatar 5:23pm
spacebrother:

This one is almost punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm

There's a sort of Toy Dolls vibe to it.
Avatar 5:24pm

The Toy Dolls cover is fun, too
Avatar 5:25pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm

I didn't realize that they covered this! Ha!

SBG: I think the song influenced one of the songs from the Spinal Tap movie β€œ All the pretty little flowers”.🌺
Avatar 5:26pm
zivilars:

@Austin Rich: They did indeed! It was not sung by Olga, but drummer Marty!
Avatar 5:27pm

(at least live, I'm not so sure at the moment about the studio version)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm

Kaleidoscope's album was called "Tangerine Dream."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Austin Rich:

Toy Dolls are one of those bands I only know a handful of songs, mostly from roommates. But I should explore more deeply. I suspect I would go nuts.
Avatar 5:32pm
Mr Fab:

"Kaleidoscope" was a very hippie word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Austin Rich:

I think there were a few bands called "Kaleidoscope," if I recall.
Avatar 5:34pm
spacebrother:

@ Fab - Sounds like the kind of word you'd repeat 1000 times on an acid trip. I guess that's the litmus test for a hippie word.
Avatar 5:34pm
spacebrother:

@ Austin - I'd like to hear the others!
Avatar 5:34pm
zivilars:

@Austin Rich: There's a fantastic Toy Dolls live VHS "Live in Japan" from 1991 which is the band in its prime (IMO) – sadly, it never was officially re-released on DVD or so
Avatar 5:35pm
zivilars:

So entertaining live until today! Olga never ages!
Avatar 5:35pm
spacebrother:

@ zivalrs - Are they still touring?!
Avatar 5:36pm
zivilars:

@spacebrother: Yes, still on the road – most recent video on YouTube is an "arte" broadcast on a French festival
Avatar 5:37pm
spacebrother:

I couldn't find a much more hippie title than "Sit With The Guru."
Avatar 5:37pm
zivilars:

of course, drummer and bassist changed so often within the years – the only constant is Olga
Avatar 5:37pm
spacebrother:

@ zivlars - Gotta look them up and see if they're hitting LA anytime soon.
Avatar 5:39pm
spacebrother:

Had to include some Japanese GS! (Group Sound)
Avatar 5:40pm
zivilars:

@spacebrother: Won't hold my breath when it comes to USA dates, unfortunately, but they are consistently touring all over Europe until today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm

Discogs has at least 9 different "Kaleidoscope" bands. I have no idea how many are authentic hippy acts.
Avatar 5:41pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm

I mean, I could see a few that have the same name. But after the year 2000, you can search the internet... there shouldn't be any new ones after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
Austin Rich:

I like this one!

Avatar 5:44pm
Mr Fab:

Speaking of great live, The B52s announced their last US tour dates. The "Farewell Tour," they claim.

Uh oh - The fact that their schedule doesn't say LA, but "Inglewood," means that they're probably playing stadiums...

Avatar 5:44pm

@ Fab - Fred said it meant they wouldn't play tours or big venues any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Austin Rich:

Oooof. Now I'm going to regret all the opportunities I could have seen b52s for much cheaper, and didn't.
Avatar 5:46pm
spacebrother:

@ Austin - I was lucky enough to see them 2 or 3 times, but it was in their second phase, after Ricky died, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
Austin Rich:

It just never felt like a priority? And of course... now it does! (Silly me.)
  5:47pm

Austin: I saw them in 1980 ( I think) at Stony Brook college on Long Island.
Avatar 5:47pm

Somewhere in a parallel universe, there's a Lee Hazlewood duet album together with Lee Marvin called "Lee & Lee"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
