They’ve had more line-up changes than Marlon Brando had hot dinners (with both Motorhead’s Lemmy and Culture Club’s Jon Moss joining briefly). They did a lot of speed. Blue Orchids	The Flood "The Flood" by "Blue Orchids"	The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) [Expanded Version]	Rough Trade / LTM Recordings	1980 / 2003	The Blue Orchids, formed by ex-Fallistas Martin Bramah and Una Baines come off sounding a bit like a more psychedelic early Fall; replacing the tense anger and wit of Mark E Smith with the starry-eyed hallucinogenic wonder of Martin Bramah. Baine's keyboards are almost as dinky as those used in her previous band, yet evoke a more complex, swirling headtrip here. Bramah's jagged guitar is still present but lower in the mix and a bit more subdued. This album is definitely psychedelic; evoking the mushroom trip the band took while recording it. You'll also notice fairly quickly that this album sounds like a product of the the late70's/ early 80's post-punk/new wave movement. Yet at the same time it sounds neither like a 60's throwback nor like any of their post-punk counterparts. This song wasn't actually on the original 1982 full-length album, but, rather, was from their debut 1980 seven-inch single.		0:09:30 (Pop-up)

They know their way around twang." Chicago Reader's Jessica Hopper described Shannon and the Clams as "something from a John Waters lucid dream... complete with horny teenage anthems that walk the line between greasy, frantic 50s rock 'n' roll and innocent, hip-swinging 60s pop." Rushnychok	Chervona Ruta "Chervona Ruta" by "Rushnychok"	Rushnychok Vol. 1	Sage Promotions	1973	Ukrainian-Canadian band from Lachine (Quebec) active from 1969 to 1980. Four male singers, accompanied by electric guitars, percussion and accordion, they were one of the first "Beatle-esque" groups from Canada. The accordion has a special place and preserves a traditional flavour in dance pieces such as waltzes, tangos, rhumbas, fox-trots, hopaks and other Ukrainian dances. The more contemporary pieces in the Anglo-American style are dominated by guitars and percussion. The tonality of the voices is anglicized, yet the harmony remains traditional and the tempos, dynamic and rapid. Finally, the rhythmic effects are emphasized by accentuated off-beat rhythms. "Chervona" is translated from Ukrainian as red. The ruta flower has yellow blooms, but according to legend, on the eve of Ivan Kupala Day, the flower turns red for a very short time on the eve of the summer solstice (celebrated on June 23 or sometimes July 7). The flower brings fortune to the person who finds it. In various versions of the tale, the fern flower brings luck, wealth, or the ability to understand animal speech. However, the flower is closely guarded by evil spirits and anyone who finds the flower will have access to earthly riches, which have never benefited anyone, so the decision to pick the flower or leave it alone is left up to the individual...		0:16:48 (Pop-up)

Their name The Garden is intended as a metaphor for their music "growing" and evolving. They hail from Orange County, CA. Babs is musically smitten with them. The name change was made to signal a departure from its initial punk sound into something that incorporated psychedelia, funk, industrial, and pop. Their only album album is an enduring document of the Southern California underground. Based in crime-ridden '80s Los Angeles against the backdrop of juvenile hardcore and vapid hard rock, 100 Flowers crafted a sound that rests between the inspired bursts of The Minutemen and the pastoral jangle of The Dream Syndicate with similarities to the equally oblique Monitor and The Gun Club. The trio wielded a gripping visual aesthetic and hyper-literate lyrical content that reflected their art-school backgrounds, while a ferocity and frustration borne out of their bleak urban environment permeates their songs.		0:34:36 (Pop-up)

The band was originally formed in the United Kingdom in 1981 as a trio, but after the other members left in 1984 and 1985 to work on other projects, the group became the work of Douglas P. and various collaborators. Over the band's four decades of existence, they have made numerous shifts in style and presentation, resulting in an overall shift from initial post-punk and Industrial music influence to a more acoustic and folk music-oriented approach. d had been members of the political punk band Crisis, which formed in 1977. Crisis had gained a substantial following in the UK punk subculture. Crisis performed at rallies for The Right to Work, Rock Against Racism, and the Anti-Nazi League. For 1984's Burial LP, Death in June began to adopt a more traditional European folk sound, using more acoustic guitars, references to ancient and contemporary European history, and combining heavy percussion with electronic soundscapes and post-industrial experimentation.		0:37:23 (Pop-up)
Public Image Limited	Flowers Of Romance	The Flowers Of Romance	Warner	1981	Recorded after Jah Wobble left the band and was not formally replaced. The resulting album was notable for its almost complete lack of bass parts. Martin Atkins, who had initially joined at the tail end of the Metal Box sessions, was re-recruited to drum on The Flowers of Romance. Levene had by then largely abandoned guitar in favour of synthesiser, picking up a new technique although owing a debt to Allen Ravenstine of Pere Ubu. Atkins' propulsive marching band-style drumming, the lack of bass and guitar, and Lydon's increasing lyrical abstraction made this LP a difficult listen for rock fans, and contemporary reviews expressed great confusion. The record consists mostly of drums, vocals, musique concrète, and tape loops, with only gestures toward bass (played by Levene) and keyboards. The title "Flowers of Romance" was the name of a short-lived band featuring Keith Levene, Viv Albertine, and Sid Vicious in 1976.		0:40:06 (Pop-up)

Blitz	Flowers & Fire "Flowers & Fire" by "Blitz"	Second Empire Justice	Future Records	1983	Blitz were founded in 1980 in New Mills, Derbyshire, England. They were No Future Records' first signing. Their early releases, the All Out Attack E.P. (1981) and the Voice Of A Generation LP (1982), are widely recognized classics of Oi!/street punk. With their second album, 1983's Second Empire Justice, the band moved into new wave/post-punk territory. The album was a commercial failure and the band split up shortly thereafter. Guitarist Nidge Miller resurrected the Blitz name with the 1990 album The Killing Dream and 1992's New Breed EP. On these recordings, Miller played all instruments and Gary Basnett of Attak provided the vocals. The Fall	Garden (Peel Session Version)	Perverted By Language (Expanded Edition) / The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004	Sanctuary Records	1983 / 2004	Recorded for John Peel on March 21st 1983 (and broadcast two days later) this was the first session after Marc Riley's departure, and found the band stripped down to 5 members, with Craig Scanlon as sole guitarist. By the end of the same year, they would record another Peel Session with the lineup expanded back to six members, including Brix E Smith on guitar and vocals. Craig Scanlon wouldn't be the sole guitarist again until 1991. This song is cryptic, lengthy and hypnotic. It featured the guest vocals of Anita Lane, and subsequently found its way to her own 1993 album "Dirty Pearl", a collection "recorded from 1982 to that year. It consists of her work with The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Einstürzende Neubauten and Die Haut, as well as exclusive album tracks. The album was co-produced by Bargeld, Cave, Harvey, Johannes Beck, John Cafferty, Die Haut, Einstürzende Neubaten, Sven Röhrig, and The Birthday Party." Anita Lane had been in an intermittent relationship with Nick Cave from 1977 to the 80's. She co-wrote songs for both The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, the latter band of which she was briefly a member before embarking on a career of collaborations and occasional solo releases.		1:13:04 (Pop-up)

In January 1986, Blast First and the band's American label, Homestead Records, both released "Flower" as a 12" backed by "Halloween"; the first run of the UK edition was on yellow/orange vinyl. Blast First also issued the song as a 7" single in edited form, retitled "Flower (Anti-Fuckword Radio Edit)"), with a backwards version, "Rewolf (Special Natas Mix)", on the flipside. The title for this album is taken from a Scooby Doo episode, and features many songs that reference Scooby Doo, so, there's that, just to start. Stewart Mason [AllMusic] explains: "The very definition of "cult favorites," the Chrysanthemums (known since the mid-'90s as Chrys&themums) are the sort of group who inspire loyalty among a small band of admirers while remaining entirely below the radar of the public at large. Their music, a mixture of British Invasion-inspired pop, experimental eccentricity, and psychedelic flourishes, is just slightly too odd for wide mainstream acceptance, but few bands walk the knife's edge between accessibility and impenetrability so well. The Chrysanthemums started in 1986, when the British fanzine Outlet printed articles on guitarist/songwriter Alan Jenkins' lo-fi psychedelic pop band the Deep Freeze Mice and classically-trained keyboardist/indie label owner Terry Burrows in the same issue. Jenkins and Burrows swapped records and quickly found themselves in the studio together. Over two weekends, the duo recorded enough material for a single, "Another Sacred Day," and a debut album, Is That a Fish on Your Shoulder or Are You Just Happy to See Me? Although Jenkins and Burrows recorded all the instruments themselves, the pair made up three other members for the credits. (Burrows also adopted the name Yukio Yung around this time; like the band name, the pseudonym came from Burrows' fondness for Japanese culture.) Released on their own Eggplant label, both the single and the album did well enough for the Chrysanthemums to become a full-time venture. Adding Burrows' friend Martin Howells (who adopted the identity of one of the first album's imaginary musicians, Vladimir Zajkowiecz) on bass, the Chrysanthemums quickly recorded an EP..." in 1988 & followed up with material until; during a 1991 five-week tour of Germany, Burrows and Jenkins had a falling out, and the group broke up upon their return to England. Jenkins formed the Creams with ex-members of his side project Ruth's Refrigerator, and Burrows released a number of albums and singles both as Yukio Yung and under a variety of other group names... ...In the mid-'90s, Burrows and Howells reunited, resurrecting their old band name with a clever new visual pun, Chrys&themums, to differentiate the new material from releases by the Jenkins/Burrows/Howells lineup. With Andy Ward (Camel, Hawkwind, the Bevis Frond) on drums, the duo released 1996's The Baby's Head. Less overtly bizarre and with a much greater emphasis on catchy, Brit-pop-style melodies, the new incarnation is poppier but no less satisfying than the original." -- Now they are releasing material again in the 2020's under their original name "The Chrysanthemums". I'm not entirely sure if this means that Jenkins and Burrows have patched things up and reunited, but it kind of seems so. As a result, the album failed to attain widespread popularity around the time of its release. During 1984 and 1985, the band recorded various demos at the recording studio Noise in midtown Manhattan, which had a large selection of bells and chimes, which defined their distinctive sound. While doing promotion for the single "Boy" , the band met Depeche Mode at a party hosted by Rockpool (modern rock promotion company). Subsequently, the band was offered the opening slot on the North American leg of Depeche Mode's Some Great Reward Tour, they also were openers on the Black Celebration tour. BOL disbanded in 1993, with the rise of grunge and feeling disenfranchised from the shift to the rise of a different type of new electronic music...decided to call it a day, "It felt like the synth pop songs that we were doing didn't feel like they had a place at that moment, in a strange way, even for us. You could feel the tide change. We could've continued going on if we wanted to, we just basically felt we had sort of done our thing at that point."		1:36:09 (Pop-up)
Talking Heads	(Nothing But) Flowers	Naked	Sire	1988	This song appears on the band's final album Naked, released in 1988. It was released as the album's second single. In addition to the band, the song features Kirsty MacColl on backup vocals and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths, on lead guitar. Three African musicians played on this track: percussionists Brice Wassy and Abdou M'Boup, and guitarist Yves N'Djock. Wassy and N'Djock are from Cameroon; M'Boup is from Senegal. The connection was keyboard player Wally Badarou, a session musician who played on some other tracks from the album. Dickens was so impressed that he encouraged his record company, Columbia, to give Robbins a contract. Robbins was able to handle a wide variety of musical styles with his versatile baritone. He recorded country, western, rockabilly, Hawaiian music, gospel, and his specialty, which was pop ballads. The venue oversold tickets, so the power cut mid-gig (during Catholic Block, it sounded really cool suddenly going all unplugged clicky-clacky acoustic for several seconds, actually.) As the power stayed out, they stayed onstage and Thurston Moore chatted with the audience asking questions and sharing thoughts about Toronto. When it became clear the club was to be cleared and the show was over he said "it's the cops fault it's always the cops fault." Hahaha

They’ve had more line-up changes than Marlon Brando had hot dinners (with both Motorhead’s Lemmy and Culture Club’s Jon Moss joining briefly). They did a lot of speed. Blue Orchids	The Flood "The Flood" by "Blue Orchids"	The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) [Expanded Version]	Rough Trade / LTM Recordings	1980 / 2003	The Blue Orchids, formed by ex-Fallistas Martin Bramah and Una Baines come off sounding a bit like a more psychedelic early Fall; replacing the tense anger and wit of Mark E Smith with the starry-eyed hallucinogenic wonder of Martin Bramah. Baine's keyboards are almost as dinky as those used in her previous band, yet evoke a more complex, swirling headtrip here. Bramah's jagged guitar is still present but lower in the mix and a bit more subdued. This album is definitely psychedelic; evoking the mushroom trip the band took while recording it. You'll also notice fairly quickly that this album sounds like a product of the the late70's/ early 80's post-punk/new wave movement. Yet at the same time it sounds neither like a 60's throwback nor like any of their post-punk counterparts. Four male singers, accompanied by electric guitars, percussion and accordion, they were one of the first "Beatle-esque" groups from Canada. The accordion has a special place and preserves a traditional flavour in dance pieces such as waltzes, tangos, rhumbas, fox-trots, hopaks and other Ukrainian dances. The more contemporary pieces in the Anglo-American style are dominated by guitars and percussion. The tonality of the voices is anglicized, yet the harmony remains traditional and the tempos, dynamic and rapid. Finally, the rhythmic effects are emphasized by accentuated off-beat rhythms. "Chervona" is translated from Ukrainian as red. The ruta flower has yellow blooms, but according to legend, on the eve of Ivan Kupala Day, the flower turns red for a very short time on the eve of the summer solstice (celebrated on June 23 or sometimes July 7). The flower brings fortune to the person who finds it. In various versions of the tale, the fern flower brings luck, wealth, or the ability to understand animal speech. However, the flower is closely guarded by evil spirits and anyone who finds the flower will have access to earthly riches, which have never benefited anyone, so the decision to pick the flower or leave it alone is left up to the individual...		0:16:48 (Pop-up)

Over the band's four decades of existence, they have made numerous shifts in style and presentation, resulting in an overall shift from initial post-punk and Industrial music influence to a more acoustic and folk music-oriented approach. d had been members of the political punk band Crisis, which formed in 1977. Crisis had gained a substantial following in the UK punk subculture. Crisis performed at rallies for The Right to Work, Rock Against Racism, and the Anti-Nazi League. For 1984's Burial LP, Death in June began to adopt a more traditional European folk sound, using more acoustic guitars, references to ancient and contemporary European history, and combining heavy percussion with electronic soundscapes and post-industrial experimentation.		0:37:23 (Pop-up)
Public Image Limited	Flowers Of Romance	The Flowers Of Romance	Warner	1981	Recorded after Jah Wobble left the band and was not formally replaced. The resulting album was notable for its almost complete lack of bass parts. Martin Atkins, who had initially joined at the tail end of the Metal Box sessions, was re-recruited to drum on The Flowers of Romance. Levene had by then largely abandoned guitar in favour of synthesiser, picking up a new technique although owing a debt to Allen Ravenstine of Pere Ubu. Atkins' propulsive marching band-style drumming, the lack of bass and guitar, and Lydon's increasing lyrical abstraction made this LP a difficult listen for rock fans, and contemporary reviews expressed great confusion. The record consists mostly of drums, vocals, musique concrète, and tape loops, with only gestures toward bass (played by Levene) and keyboards. The title "Flowers of Romance" was the name of a short-lived band featuring Keith Levene, Viv Albertine, and Sid Vicious in 1976.		0:40:06 (Pop-up)

Their early releases, the All Out Attack E.P. (1981) and the Voice Of A Generation LP (1982), are widely recognized classics of Oi!/street punk. With their second album, 1983's Second Empire Justice, the band moved into new wave/post-punk territory. The album was a commercial failure and the band split up shortly thereafter. Guitarist Nidge Miller resurrected the Blitz name with the 1990 album The Killing Dream and 1992's New Breed EP. On these recordings, Miller played all instruments and Gary Basnett of Attak provided the vocals. By the end of the same year, they would record another Peel Session with the lineup expanded back to six members, including Brix E Smith on guitar and vocals. Craig Scanlon wouldn't be the sole guitarist again until 1991. This song is cryptic, lengthy and hypnotic. The album was co-produced by Bargeld, Cave, Harvey, Johannes Beck, John Cafferty, Die Haut, Einstürzende Neubaten, Sven Röhrig, and The Birthday Party." Anita Lane had been in an intermittent relationship with Nick Cave from 1977 to the 80's. The title for this album is taken from a Scooby Doo episode, and features many songs that reference Scooby Doo, so, there's that, just to start. Stewart Mason [AllMusic] explains: "The very definition of "cult favorites," the Chrysanthemums (known since the mid-'90s as Chrys&themums) are the sort of group who inspire loyalty among a small band of admirers while remaining entirely below the radar of the public at large. Their music, a mixture of British Invasion-inspired pop, experimental eccentricity, and psychedelic flourishes, is just slightly too odd for wide mainstream acceptance, but few bands walk the knife's edge between accessibility and impenetrability so well. The Chrysanthemums started in 1986, when the British fanzine Outlet printed articles on guitarist/songwriter Alan Jenkins' lo-fi psychedelic pop band the Deep Freeze Mice and classically-trained keyboardist/indie label owner Terry Burrows in the same issue. Jenkins and Burrows swapped records and quickly found themselves in the studio together. Over two weekends, the duo recorded enough material for a single, "Another Sacred Day," and a debut album, Is That a Fish on Your Shoulder or Are You Just Happy to See Me? Although Jenkins and Burrows recorded all the instruments themselves, the pair made up three other members for the credits. (Burrows also adopted the name Yukio Yung around this time; like the band name, the pseudonym came from Burrows' fondness for Japanese culture.) Released on their own Eggplant label, both the single and the album did well enough for the Chrysanthemums to become a full-time venture. Adding Burrows' friend Martin Howells (who adopted the identity of one of the first album's imaginary musicians, Vladimir Zajkowiecz) on bass, the Chrysanthemums quickly recorded an EP..." in 1988 & followed up with material until; during a 1991 five-week tour of Germany, Burrows and Jenkins had a falling out, and the group broke up upon their return to England. Jenkins formed the Creams with ex-members of his side project Ruth's Refrigerator, and Burrows released a number of albums and singles both as Yukio Yung and under a variety of other group names... ...In the mid-'90s, Burrows and Howells reunited, resurrecting their old band name with a clever new visual pun, Chrys&themums, to differentiate the new material from releases by the Jenkins/Burrows/Howells lineup. With Andy Ward (Camel, Hawkwind, the Bevis Frond) on drums, the duo released 1996's The Baby's Head. Less overtly bizarre and with a much greater emphasis on catchy, Brit-pop-style melodies, the new incarnation is poppier but no less satisfying than the original." -- Now they are releasing material again in the 2020's under their original name "The Chrysanthemums". I'm not entirely sure if this means that Jenkins and Burrows have patched things up and reunited, but it kind of seems so. While doing promotion for the single "Boy" , the band met Depeche Mode at a party hosted by Rockpool (modern rock promotion company). Subsequently, the band was offered the opening slot on the North American leg of Depeche Mode's Some Great Reward Tour, they also were openers on the Black Celebration tour. BOL disbanded in 1993, with the rise of grunge and feeling disenfranchised from the shift to the rise of a different type of new electronic music...decided to call it a day, "It felt like the synth pop songs that we were doing didn't feel like they had a place at that moment, in a strange way, even for us. In addition to the band, the song features Kirsty MacColl on backup vocals and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths, on lead guitar. Three African musicians played on this track: percussionists Brice Wassy and Abdou M'Boup, and guitarist Yves N'Djock. Wassy and N'Djock are from Cameroon; M'Boup is from Senegal. The connection was keyboard player Wally Badarou, a session musician who played on some other tracks from the album. He recorded country, western, rockabilly, Hawaiian music, gospel, and his specialty, which was pop ballads. The venue oversold tickets, so the power cut mid-gig (during Catholic Block, it sounded really cool suddenly going all unplugged clicky-clacky acoustic for several seconds, actually.) As the power stayed out, they stayed onstage and Thurston Moore chatted with the audience asking questions and sharing thoughts about Toronto. When it became clear the club was to be cleared and the show was over he said "it's the cops fault it's always the cops fault." Hahaha
