Yes, pretty sure it was all Americana. I think I remember a pedal steel and a banjo player. I think they were all Japanese in the band. I made a stealth recording that came out so so. Have not listened to it since then. Now motivated to see if I can find the files. It wasn't too long ago, around the time I began to be a WFMU regular listener, because I remember after buying my tickets but before the show hearing Mayuko expressing disappointment that tickets sold out before she got one.

Existential nihilist potato salad would simply reject the idea that there's one true way to make potato salad and find that way that best enhances human freedom from (cold-salad-related) metaphysical straitjackets -- knowing that that way can change and might be different at different picnics.

It would be better called as antifoundational potato salad.

And I bet it would have horseradish in it.

I was in Paris for Bastille Day in 2000. K8 and I went out with some cool food-service workers we'd met (they were also a a fashion designer and flimmaker, of course). We went to watch the fireworks, and I was really surprised by how reserved the crowd was for the main national holiday in the *year 2000*. (Keep in mind, I was twenty-five and really loved fireworks). No one else was even noticeably drinking. Except for ONE GUY, who had a backpack full of beer, no shirt, and spent the whole show trying to time a big blast to come after he shouted, "Un, deux, trois -- vive les emplois!"

I liked him.

"The design of the present flag entailed substituting the country's coat of arms on a breadfruit leaf with the diamonds. They are a reference to both the letter "V", which is the first letter of the country's name, and its nickname as the "Gems of the Antilles" and "Jewels of the Caribbean". Accordingly, the flag itself has been given the moniker of "The Gems". "

(Not to harp on the potato salad but just to say that nihilism gets a bad rap I never think it deserves. Just read this passage in a review of Everything Everywhere All at Once: "Rather than being an abdication of responsibility, existential nihilism, to me, is a deeply subversive form of resistance and liberation, a tool for resilience under ideological hegemony. You can discard dogma at will and restructure your narrative of yourself and of the world at any time. There is no sin or stain to which you are irrevocably anchored; no failure that you are always destined to be; no inescapable fatalism. You are always free to redefine yourself, to grow, to incorporate new knowledge about the world, to treat yourself and others better—to go against the status quo and forge a new way ahead in uncertain times." That's the potato salad I want at the picnic!)

Yes Existentialism being associated always with a bad mood & a negative misanthropic attitude - is probly unfair to the actual textbook philosophy. If perhaps not the professed adherents. Necessarily.

"Must be exhausting."

Nihilist Potato Salad certainly makes for a band name.

Wait, need to make that be Existential Nihilist Potato Salad.

coelacanth∅:

so, do you think it's possible that all the pretend-christians now clearly fully in charge of the destiny of this planet are actually existential nihilists?
(i mean, they can't actually believe in "heaven and hell", and if they did, must surely know they'd be going to hell. so maybe they're existential nihilists, but know they couldn't sell an idea with so many syllables to the american public)

I admire - & am even simpatico with - the intellectual rigor of Existentialism on one hand
- yet just as they ask us to presume nothing - they presume that the ratiocinating intellect is our only organ of understanding.
I am of course myself a mystic & metaphysician - so to speak...
Tho I note that Pattern & Meaning are not exactly identical...

WR: Possibly the more words the better in this particular case.

Well - Fundamentalists of course adhere to the Mythology of Apocalypse. It's the symbolic orientation that vertical Heaven Above is Good - & horizontal Earth right here is corrupt & Bad... They are, in other words, happy enuff to vouchsafe the End Times asap - & literally make of Earth a Hell.

That ignores the fact the Earth is a rock that only exists by chance.

Has anyone here tasted breadfruit ?

David, the band would likely end up being referred to ENPS. I think that is de rigueur for any band name over three words.

...I see it as very Jungian. However 'Rational' contemporary society believes itself to be - it still has all the tribal & archetypal Instincts in full force running its unconscious unawares. The great enterprise of Scientific understanding has barely been extended by Humankind to its own nature. Alas !

McKenna posits that our earlier history predated writing - perhaps the greater part - & the patriarchal militant egoistic era we believe 'normal' is in fact greatly imbalanced & pathological. Given our circumstance - I'm inclined to agree.
