G'morning.

Dean:

I went to Linz in 1984, heard a performance of Vivaldi's L'Olimpiade at the opera house.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
WR:

Hi Dean, in answer to your question yesterday about seeing Maupin with Lee Morgan, I think the answer is yes. According to a discography I found:
1970-06-26 Lee Morgan Quintet – Both/And Private Recording and KQED Broadcast
Lee Morgan (tp), Bennie Maupin (ts/fl/b-cl), Harold Mabern (p), Jymie Merritt (b), Mickey Roker (ds)
Both/And, San Francisco, CA, June 26, 1970

Going to the Both/And was my first experience going to a night club and my head was spinning with all the new. Although I had got Miles Davis Bitches Brew I did not connect that Maupin from the Davis record was in the Lee Morgan group. Don't even remember what details I knew about the Davis record at that time.
  1:06pm
Dean:

Good info, WR. Maupin really shines on the complete Lighthouse set.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
WR:

I got the Both/And recording recently, don't think is it from the same night that I went, but still want to do a deep listen session with it to try and conjure up some memories. I also have the Lighthouse set waiting for me to listen. I lived in Berkeley CA for just a few months in 1970. By the end of July, I was back in Texas.
  1:19pm
Dean:

Whereabouts in Berkeley? I moved here in '01, which doesn't seem that long ago.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
WR:

From vague memory, I think the apartment building was on Oxford. Three of us from Texas went to Berkeley in January of 1970. We didn't stay. I was the last to go back to Texas, in July.
  1:25pm
Dean:

Ah, so close to campus. A lot has changed in fifty years.
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

The one time I visited Berkeley (around 2004, maybe?) I was surprised at how sedate and suburban it seemed. I was expecting to see sandal-clad hippies dropping acid on every corner.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Yvang:

By the way, what is a linz? en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 1:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Actually, just checked and I was in Berkeley in 2007.
  1:31pm
Dean:

Indeed, Berkeley has a lot of suburban residential areas, parks, and distinctive neighborhoods, some reminiscent of, say, NE Portland. If you'd been on Telegraph on a weekend you'd have seen the vestiges of hippie-dom at the street sale.
  1:33pm
Dean:

By 2007 we'd moved from Albany (small town near NW Berkeley) to SW Berkeley. A year or so later we were back in Albany. In 2012 we returned to Berkeley.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
WR:

Yes, was just a short walk from campus. I was just looking at Bing street map and I'm not sure of the address. I don't know if I have it on some ancient scrap of memorabilia. But possibly was on the 1700 block of Oxford.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
chresti:

When in 2007 Tony? Chances are we were there visiting my family in El Sobrante
Avatar 1:36pm
Tony Coulter:

October of 2007.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
WR:

I was in the area in 1999 for work and drove around Berkeley a bit. Besides the university everything seemed different from when I was there in 1970.
  1:38pm
Dean:

1700 Oxford is a block from my kids' pediatrician.

Tony, I think maybe you were that tall kid who trick-or-treated our place on Halloween that year!

RE: "What is a Linz?": I may be overthinking this, but I think they were reacting to people who pronounce the city's name LinZ, instead of LinTS (as Austrians would say it). They seemed to be pronouncing it with a 'z," so I did too.

Sacramento c.2011 Thanksgiving morning we strolled out of our hosts' house for a walk. Approaching us on the sidewalk was a pair of guys also out for an early morning walk. One of them was Wynton.
