	🎸 ♥ 9:12pm Austin Rich: I wasn't a punk, either. I was a nerd, and all of my interest in punk sort of comes from the nerdy route. (Reading 'zines and books and borrowing albums / checking them out from the library.) I love the music, but I'm a pretty lame guy.

	9:14pm Mr X: I was so scared to go to my first few punk shows. I was a hippie, and I was sure the punks would beat me up. But my friends talked me into going. It was such a relief when I realized nobody at those shows gave a fuck that I was there.

	🎸 ♥ 9:16pm Austin Rich: Monty Python was totally a revolution in my mind. I listened to so much boring, straight laced comedy in the 80's. And then I found Monty Python on PBS in High School... wow!
	9:17pm Mr X: My first punk show with a non-local band was Frightwig at the Cage Ramp in Eugene, around 1988.

	9:18pm Obadiah Baird: I was a depressed loner who got bullied by literally everyone and then one day I heard punk rock. I still vividly remember the moment I heard my first punk songs and realized other people felt the same way I did and I wasn't some anomaly.
	9:18pm Don-O: Yea, in the late 70's everyone in school was watching 3's Company and its ilk, I was a SubGenius moment with the Python and Gong stuff.
	🎸 ♥ 9:19pm Austin Rich: That story sounds sort of familiar to me. I'm not sure if it was instant, but I do remember eventually coming back to punk songs more than other songs. And then it was all I wanted.

	🎸 ♥ 9:24pm Austin Rich: While more in the "Power Pop" vein, I very much recommend the Teen Line series of comps. And: if you have them, make sure to rip them before the cdrs wear out! I've heard this series is prone to giving out, as the cdrs are crap. But the music is AMAZING!

	🎸 ♥ 9:26pm Krys O.: My friends and I would go out dancing in Manhattan and take the train back to suburban Westchester County. I was sleep deprived, but I still had excellent grades. I was partly geek, partly party kid. My brother-in-law gifted me with a membership to the Devo fan club too. Mom and Dad didn't know what to make of me wearing thrift store clothes and having super short hair. Zoinks!

	9:31pm Mr X: I marvel at how these obscure punk bands managed to make these recordings on a shoestring, and never got acclaim or wealth for their efforts.
	9:32pm Mr Fab: You’re right about what most punk kids were like, Austin. If you look at pictures of the LA punk scene, you don’t see many giant Mohawks or studs and spikes. They were expensive! And our schools and parents wouldn’t have allowed it. We would take t-shirts or white dress shirts, a magic marker, and make our own shirts with band logos, the anarchy sign, etc.
	🎸 ♥ 9:32pm Austin Rich: A lot of them aren't as good as others. But there's a gem or two on each of them. There's one that is actually just one band, making up different names for all their own songs on their first "album." Been trying to track that one down.

	🎸 ♥ 9:35pm Austin Rich: I was in a small town in Oregon. It was harder to get beer underage than it was to get drugs. Most kids just did drugs.
	9:35pm Mr X: When I was am exchange student in France, assigned to a homestay family, the family's kid fancied himself a punk rocker. So he made his mom buy him a leather jacket. I remember sitting around the dinner table while he bullied his mom into sewing studs onto it. What a punk.

	🎸 ♥ 9:49pm Krys O.: One of the oldest t-shirts I have is from a Beyond Vaudeville show at NYU hosted by Danny Bonaduce. The woman who mimed to the Underdog theme was the star of the show. John Holmstrom was also in the audience. I was at a friend's party when John Holmstrom started throwing food at people. Needless to say, the party broke up. It was a going away party for Ken Weiner who also was part of Punk Magazine. Weiner was the art director at Screw when I worked there.

	10:29pm Mr Fab: John Cale’s one-note piano on “Waiting For The Man” pioneered punk piano. Which he then applied to “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” I always loved the idea of classicaly-trained Cale playing just one note.

	🎸 ♥ 10:33pm Austin Rich: The Homework series of comps focuses on DIY releases from the US, often with a "post-punk" sort of vibe. (Keys / synths were often present, as were other instruments.) But still more in the "punk" than "post."

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	9:18pm Obadiah Baird: I was a depressed loner who got bullied by literally everyone and then one day I heard punk rock. I still vividly remember the moment I heard my first punk songs and realized other people felt the same way I did and I wasn't some anomaly.

And our schools and parents wouldn’t have allowed it. We would take t-shirts or white dress shirts, a magic marker, and make our own shirts with band logos, the anarchy sign, etc.

John Holmstrom was also in the audience. I was at a friend's party when John Holmstrom started throwing food at people. Needless to say, the party broke up. It was a going away party for Ken Weiner who also was part of Punk Magazine. Weiner was the art director at Screw when I worked there.
