This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

One of the LPs I bought at my first visit to Moby Disc records in Van Nuys c.'76, was Heaven & Hell. I subsequently sold it, Albedo 0.39, and Spiral. I particularly wish I'd kept the latter.

This record has a spotty reputation and quite rightly so but on purely musical terms I think it's pretty exceptional
  8:00pm
Dean:

Perhaps because of the connection to Yes via Jon Anderson I sometimes confuse Vangelis with Patrick Moraz. His first(?) solo album doesn't generate a vibe entirely unlike V's. Litotes? I mean, V was Greek.
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

@dean: Story of I? I'm not sure i've heard it before, I should study up
  8:03pm
Dean:

Yes. I mean, correct.
  8:05pm
Dean:

But also Moraz's work on Relayer. The synth tones are sharp, sometimes brittle, a timbre I associate with some of V's late '70s records.

Despite having unloaded Vangelis LPs in the '80s, I did recently acquire a copy of La Fête Sauvage.

Yep, there are those crisp digital staccato glissandos, if that's even possible.
Avatar 8:56pm
Flash Strap:

so crisp!
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

La Fête Sauvage is a really cool record to have, imperfect as an album but a wonderful piece of marginal exotica and a very unusual sonic document
  8:58pm
Dean:

I was drawn to it not entirely because it was a Vangelis album, but because for a while back then it was ubiquitous.

  9:02pm
Dean:

Here's another LP we'd spin in the record store.
Avatar 9:03pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, it was the first "Mondo" film, and its soundtrack had a surprise int'l hit so the OST LP became much more ubiquitous than the film or people who'd seen it, you can still find it in pretty much any record store for cheap
  9:04pm
Dean:

Random thoughts: I'm hearing a slight kinship with Tomita here, but more so with Nik Raicevic/Nik Pascal. You really ought to feature some of that guy's bizarre meanderings. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS IF YOU ARE STONED.
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

Beaubourg is very possibly Vangelis' most experimental/challenging album, i love it
  9:06pm
Dean:

Raicevic/Pascal was certainly challenging...
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

@Dean: oh i've played Head a few times, and i don't mean to contradict you but i enjoy it very much stoned!
Avatar 9:07pm
Flash Strap:

Tomita kinship especially audible in the tones on Beaubourg i think, totally agree
Avatar 9:07pm
Flash Strap:

the squiggles and chirps, etc.
  9:09pm
Dean:

I love it, too, but I don't get stoned. I have this theory, but we don't need to go there.
Avatar 9:11pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Would seem he never lacked for either Artistic Vision nor Intent. That is - he seemed to have something to say - & great imagination as well as extraordinary ability to say it.
  9:11pm
Dean:

I wish I could connect the work of Vangelis to the more traditional Greek music I enjoy. A buddy of mine is married to a Greek woman. He bequeathed me a bunch of Greek music, from pop to classical to folk. I am part Greek, a heritage of which I'm proud for some nonsense reason. I love the music, and I'd love to hear how Vangelis is part of the heritage.

@dean: I know he was majorly influenced by traditional greek music, but it's hard to tell where that's appearing a lot of the time. he wasn't trained at a conservatory and his compositional approach is highly intuitive and synaesthetic, which makes it hard to identify formal affinities. But I have a track coming up that actually fits the bill to a perfect T
