Late Fifties/Early Sixties Coltrane quartets are as good as it gets; well to me at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
coelacanth∅:

funny about kool cigarettes, they're pretty harsh.
hot, one might say.
i'll have a marlboro though, if someone's got one to spare
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:09pm

My old man smoked Kools when I was a kid

Hi Larry.

Yes, Lee Morgan was 19 at the time.

Let the blue train ride.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm

It's weird. neither of my parents have smoked for more than 40 years but I remember their brands, and the brands my gradfather smoked, as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
coelacanth∅:

i know a cat, lives out west now, smoked kools because most people wouldn't bum them off him!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm

@WR - It's early days for Morgan. He was playing with Art Blakey when he recorded this session

easy to remember what my parents smoked. both smoked marlboro reds, ~5-1/2 packs between them, and never anything else, for my entire childhood. (and in my mother's case, until she was ~62)

Avatar 3:18pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

@ coelacanth∅: we're hovering around 95 here in Texas... just a little aggravating if you ask me.
@Larry: absolutely! I copped A Love Supreme from Target a few months ago. I wished their quality control was better, but yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
coelacanth∅:

Ellington, Diz... who else did Miles borrow from for this piece?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm

Vincent i can take 95 fine for a few days, beyond that, yeah aggravating.
85 is perfect light clothing weather for me; but i like the cold weather just as well... my apartment stays TOO cool a lot of the time though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Funky16Corners:

It has been weirdly cool hereabouts, though we had one day this week above 75
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Lee Morgan again on this session
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Brian in UK:

Larry, s'funny, my first jazz album was Coltrane Jazz. On listening & digesting it I realised that it would be with me for the longest time. The sound of the Tenor felt like it had been ingrained within me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
coelacanth∅:

we had a couple days above 80f recently. now it's dropped again and plant life suffers
Avatar 🥁 3:36pm
Erica:

It will be hotter tomorrow and Saturday in South Jersey.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - My first Coltrane-as-leader album was Love Supreme, but only because i had heard so much about it. I had a lot of fun working my way through his Atlantic catalog, as well as the rest of the Impulse stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
coelacanth∅:

Erica the forecast here for saturday is 90ºf. it's 60 here now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Funky16Corners:

Tina Brooks wrote most of his material as well. Great composer, and according to Freddie Hubbard, able to arrange on the spot.
Avatar 🥁 3:44pm

Erica:

Luckily we got the air conditioner in and ready.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Funky16Corners:

I've lived in NJ most of my life. We barely have a Spring here. It'll go from 60 to 90 in a week and that's that
Avatar 🥁 3:47pm
Erica:

And it's still hot in September too Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Funky16Corners:

The good thing about that is we get to experience a little bit of summer without the tourists
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Funky16Corners:

We live in a beach town, so it's mostly super crowded here from May until September
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
coelacanth∅:

the touristas suck here too. lots of jersey folk! ready and eager to treat the locals, and everyone, like shit.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Funky16Corners:

Yup, same here. Fortunately we live in the adjacent town to Point Pleasant, so much of the trouble we deal with is spillover. Tons of traffic, obnoxious tourists (many also from NJ). It makes going out to dinner in the area painful, and if you need anything in Point Pleasant, you're basically fucked.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Funky16Corners:

Although, the opening of a local bagel store is imminent, which really changes the breakfast game around here.
Avatar 🥁 3:59pm
Erica:

Uh oh. Vangelis of Chariots of Fire died.
Avatar 🥁 4:01pm
Erica:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Funky16Corners:

I saw that earlier.
Avatar 🥁 4:03pm
Erica:

Yeah. He performed/recorded with Jon Anderson of Yes before.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Funky16Corners:

He was also in a cool 60s band called Aphrodites Child
Avatar 🥁 4:05pm
Erica:

Groovy Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember trying to deal with point pleasant back in the day. it's gotta be twice as bad now.
and probably much worse than up here. we have plenty of people from nyc, westchester county, connecticut... driving like assholes. (though lately it seems like many more tags from nj than in the past)
and being pushy at restaurants and cafés.

i left nj to escape from that, and it was a big improvement at first. gradually it deteriorates though.
since "9-11", and since the college started focusing away from the arts and toward business.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
WR:

Enjoying this dive into Tina Brooks, have seen his name on some sessions, albums, but never have focused on his playing before.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Funky16Corners:

It seems, also, that in many of the local beach communities, the old, middle class-ish summer homes have been knocked down and replaced with McMansions. The amount of big money comin through is crazy, like Maseratis driving around cxrazy
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@WR - There's a bunch more that I won't touch on today, sideman stuff mostly. He was so good, and unfortunately so obscure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
coelacanth∅:

ugh. Fuck rich people.
along with depriving normal people of affordable houses, they buy up shops and businesses and turn them into shit.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Brian in UK:

NJ is the most populated state?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Funky16Corners:

Having lived in the general vicinity my entire life, the upscaling of the shore is ridiculous. This used to be a place for everyone to hang out and enjoy the water, and so much of what has come n is engineered for the affluent only. The big one for me is Asbury Park. I started working at the Asbury Park Press in 1984 and the town was still a wreck from the riots of the 70s. Now they're selling million dollar beachfront condos and almost everything old is gone. It's sad.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I don't think so, but we're close to the top of the list. VERY crowded
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Funky16Corners:

I just looked it up, we're 9th in overall population, but #1 in most densely populated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Phillippe:

Hopping on the beach traffic train -- we live right at the last exit before the Chesapeake Bay bridge, so everyone from Baltimore south to about Fredericksburg VA (including all the DC suburbs) who want to go to the beach have to drive past our community. In the summer, there's no getting home without sitting in traffic from 4:00 - 11:00 PM Thursdays, noon to midnight on Friday, and pretty much all day Saturday and Sunday. Wayze and Google Maps diverts people through the back ways when the bridge starts to back up. We're lucky that we have the basics in the neighborhood shopping center, because you definitely don't want to go anywhere
