A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I remember being 12 years old & ordering "Freak Out" from RCA Music club for $2.99. At that age I didn't get it and sold it to an older brother's friend for $3.00. We are still in touch & he still has the LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh that's weird. Maybe having his home invaded and being nearly killed by a crazy person also had some bearing on that. And Lennon. Zappa fans are even crazier, having been a to a Zappa show.

One Mothers record listening memory, after a long enhanced night, decided to relax listening to Weasels Ripped My Flesh. The second side ends with the title track, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, which is the band going free form and going into a drone. I noticed that the sun was well up in the sky, got up from bed and noticed that the record was finished and apparently the Mother's drone had cross faded to the ceiling fan which I had been listening to for nearly an hour.

My introduction to this album was in 1969 when a bunch of bikers who lived down the street had a four track in the panel truck to load in their dirt bikes to take down to Mexico to race in the dirt. It was the house on the street that anything went. We would sit on the front lawn with the doors open on the truck with this booming.

I had to make a hard choice the night this album was recorded at UCLA. The night before The Grateful Dead were at The Hollywood Palladium. I went for The Dead. I'm not sorry, The Grateful Dead were on fire that night. But sometimes I still wonder if I made the right decision.

That's true, sufferwords. I think that's also why gas masks are a recurring motif with Zappa stuff.

My uncle has a Studebaker Hawk. It's quite an impressive machine. He offered to let me take it for a spin around the block but I was chicken that something would happen to it - it's so beautifully restored.

When Frank got tossed off the stage later that year and was recovering, the band continued without him. Gary Rowels who was the lead guitar player in Love took his place. I saw that version of the band twice. Once opening for The Allman Brothers at The Hollywood Bowl, and once opening for Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at The Santa Monica Civic. They were so good.

Of course every kid in L.A. could sing Eddie Are You Kidding? soon after the album came out. One day me and a friend went into Zachary All to find Eddie. He was all sweaty ironing a pair of pants in the back of the store. "Get out of here or you're going to get hurt!" is what he said to us. We ran out of the store shrieking with laughter.

Eventually we'll release a reissue of Firesign commercials that will include David Ossman's ad record for Hot Rats which includes this song and starts with the immortal voice-over "Ladies and gentlemen, the lovely Frank Zappa."

1974 I heard It Must Be a Camel off Hot Rats with the craziest sounding maniac plugging a movie at The Las Palmas Theater in Hollywood on the radio. Of course I went.
