On Steppin' Stone: It seems the Raiders did their version before the Monkees, and that the Raiders were going to release it as their next single, but then the song "Kicks" came in to them directly from Mann & Weil, so they apologized to Boyce & Hart and told them "Steppin' Stone" would come after "Kicks," but they brought it to The Monkees and The Monkees copied the Raiders (then unreleased) version note for note. Raiders were NOT happy and thought Boyce & Hart dicked them around

Eric R. awww... well, I did an interview with him for L.A. Weekly, traveled down from San Francisco (where I was living at the time) and was pissed off with his lame one-word answers to really well-thought-out questions I asked. I stopped the interview. Melinda said "what's wrong" and I said "I can't use any of this..." So she sent Brian into his studio room with me and told him to finish the interview right. As it turns out I realized Brian spoke in a more lucid manner once I turned off the tape deck. Once I turned off the tape deck, I grilled him about "what was the Air theme in Smile"... better than getting a tape of him giving one-word answers
