We got this show today, my wife is making Pancit Bihon and salt and pepper shrimp, and we're showing our friend Interstellar for the first time. It's a hell of a day.

I also tape recorded audio off the tv. Alas, my late ‘70s uncensored tape of “Holy Grail” taped off PBS is long gone.

@happymaan: colorist shout out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, before we got a VCR in my house, I audio recorded Monty Python, SNL, SCTV. I probably have some of those tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Rich in Washington:

I also remember the first few years of VCRs, the VHS tapes were rather expensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
ironybread:

Yes Rich, I don't think I'm imagining remembering a VHS going for $90
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, movies on VHS, before they started selling them 'sell-through' could be upwards of $100. This was when you'd go to a VHS rental place and they'd have just a few dozen movies (and usually really old titles) and they'd be in a glass display case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Rich in Washington:

But the blanks were something like $12 dollars in 1979 bucks. The price went down as more people were buying machines, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Listener Howard & the Cats:

The first VHS I ever bought was "The Abominable Dr Phibes" in the mid-1980s. I still remember that it cost about $90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember the first time I had to resort to splicing a rented VHS tape back together because my machine ate it because the movie was like $80.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Rich in Washington:

my player didn't eat it because it was expensive but it sure seemed that way.
I had my girlfriend call the video store and ask how much it would be to buy it under the ruse that we liked it so much but when they said the price, I went to work on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
ironybread:

wish I could share this deleted animation, it really is quality batshit content from Terry Gilliam #BettyBloodDonor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
fred:

I bought a bunch of VHS dance tapes, but after a couple found them unwatchable. Not really a waste of money (that went to support the right people), but what really hurts is thinking of those tapes nobody ever watched, and never will
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Rich in Washington:

I believe the German episodes are on US Netflix. At least they were a couple of years ago.

Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee in North Hollywood was once the great happy hunting ground for every VHS tape ever released. Sadly they closed a few years back. Don't know what became of their archive

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm

Hi Feldy!
Avatar 2:20pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, Eddie Brandts would rent otherwise unavailable bootlegs. They got away with it by asking you to rent a legit tape, then you got to pick a bootleg. That’s how I saw “Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
ironybread:

FOOTNOTE, the "Trees" animation is the bit where some trees grow up into outer space, and it's very abstract, and basically it's a parody of a German detergent commercial, don't know which commercial. Wish I did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
ironybread:

Fab: Yes indeed, that's how I saw "Superstar" for the first time! And "Schizopolis", years before Criterion put it out.
