Aunt Sally  Subete Urimono   Favoriting Aunt Sally  Mesh-Key  1979    Reissued December 2, 2021. "This seminal, eponymous post-punk album by Japanese group Aunt Sally, fronted by experimental singer Phew, was first released by the iconic Vanity Records label in 1979. Over the past forty-plus years, Phew has forged a singular path through a wide range of styles - from free improvisation to pop - and has collaborated with the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, members of Can, DAF, Einstürzende Neubauten, The Raincoats and more. But Aunt Sally is where she got her start and, despite the members’ young ages (still in college at the time), Phew and the band delivered a mature, timeless take on minimalistic punk." Newly released track from a forthcoming album. "Trees Speak are Daniel Martin Diaz and Damian Diaz from Tucson, Arizona and their music often draws on the cosmic night-time magic of Arizona’s natural desert landscapes. ‘Trees Speak’ relates to the idea of future technologies storing information and data in trees and plants - using them as hard drives - and the idea that Trees communicate collectively. Special guests from the hyper-creative hub of the Tucson music scene on this release are Gabriel Sullivan, Ben Nisbet, Saul Millan, Stephani Guilmette, and Davis Jones."

ABC  Poison Arrow   Favoriting The Lexicon of Love  Universal Records  1982    Martin Fry said that the band's ambition was to fuse punk and disco, music that was more sophisticated but still had some attitude. Lyrically, the songs are all about the matters of the heart. "Most of the other people were writing about electric pylons. We wanted to hark back to Cole Porter and his ilk, but in a very modern way",    0:30:15 (Pop-up)
Talking Heads  Psycho Killer (Live Version)   Favoriting Stop Making Sense  Sire  1984    Jerry Harrison gets no love from David Byrne in this rendition of Psycho Killer, played live on the Stop Making Sense film. A simple acoustic version backed by an 808 drumbeat played out of a boombox.     0:33:37 (Pop-up)
John Foxx  Metal Beat   Favoriting Metamic  Virgin EMI Records  1980    Metamic was John Foxx's first solo record after leaving Ultravoxx. Metamatic was recorded at Pathway, a small eight-track studio in Islington, and was engineered by Gareth Jones. Foxx's electronic equipment included an ARP Odyssey, an Elka 'String Machine' and a Roland CR-78 drum machine. Several of the synth parts were played by John Wesley-Barker.    0:38:03 (Pop-up)
Spoons  Nova Heart   Favoriting Arias and Symphonies  Ready Records  1982    This week marks the 40th anniversary of this quintessential New Wave tune, one of the best ever written. It encapsulates chlly synthpop and dystopian futures but somehow strikes a melancholic chord within your heart. Any Canadian kid knows exactly what's coming when you hear that opening keyboard riff played by Rob Preuss, who was a 15 year old keyboard wunderkind when he joined the band in 1980.    0:40:57 (Pop-up)

Gerd Michaelis Chor  Doringo   Favoriting Das Hat Pfiff  Amiga  1969    Founded in 1967, the Gerd Michaelis Chor was a rotating group of singers and eventually a band. They were best known for Schlager...hit pop songs and versions of songs in an easy listening format. Ahh, so smooth and soothing.    0:54:37 (Pop-up)
B-52's  rock lobster (backwards remix)   Favoriting The B52's  Warner  1979    It pretty much makes sense that one of the greatest songs ever written sounds just as bitchin' backwards. I cannot stop listening to this. Now we need to find the band who can pull off this version, because that guitar riff is sick.    0:58:23 (Pop-up)
Kutiman & Melike Sahin  Sakla Beni   Favoriting Sakla Beni  Siyal Music  2019    HOLY FUCK. A mighty slab of psychedelic funk. Finders Keepers

2017

Turkish electronic music alongside İlhan Mimaroǧlu and Bülent Arel, Gökçen Kaynatan electrified the rock and roll scene of the late 50s/early 60s – sending teenagers wild with his custom built guitars and back lines – helping charge the climate for the birth of Anatolian rock. Then, from the sanctuary of his private studio, he revolutionised the industry with his pioneering use of electronics whilst hanging the sonic wallpaper in the living rooms of an entire generation of telly addicts as in house composer of choice for Turkey’s first national television channel TRT 1. Despite having a modest discography of only four 7” singles to his name his influence is a major current that flows through over 50 years of Turkish pop culture.

Soccer96 & Alabaster DePlume  I Was Gonna Fight Fascism   Favoriting I Was Gonna Fight Fascism  Moshi Moshi Records  2021    We've played Soccer96 before and we shall play them again! Psychedelic Krautrock synth rock outfit fights fascism with the cheerfully uneasy Alabaster DePlume, a London and Manchester based spoken word artist, writer and saxophonist aka Angus Fairbairn. This single did not make it on the amazing Soccer96 album "Dopamine" but that's ok we're fighting fascism anyhow!    1:17:17 (Pop-up)
Thick Pigeon  Dog - 45 Version   Favoriting Miranda Dali  LTM Recordings  1991    Miranda Stanton, best known for her recordings as Stanton Miranda, Miranda Dali and Thick Pigeon, is a 1980s Factory Records artist from New York City. She achieved some notice for her single "Wheels Over Indian Trails" (produced by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert from New Order) and her later cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division. She also guested on recordings by the Durutti Column. Her first band was CKM in New York with Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, where she played drums. She had a brief acting career, appearing in the Jonathan Demme films, Something Wild, Married to the Mob and Silence of the Lambs. She also played the lead role in the little known art-house film Souvenir (1999), which was directed by Michael H. Shamberg. She continues to work on small scale musical projects. Working as blythe dahl she has released instrumental tracks online which are available for license through Pump Audio/Getty Images. She also participated in the web collaboration "Empty Rooms with Casual Sounds" I thought this came out last year. It is timelessly cool.    1:24:32 (Pop-up)

Auf Auf   Favoriting

Auf Auf

Madlib Invazion

2021

The late Christian Burchard, who founded the Embryo ensemble in 1969, loved the slogan “Auf Auf,” German for “Up, Up,” or “Keep On Going.” Anyone with anything more than a passing interest in the German Krautock scene of the 1970s and 1980s knows that Burchard followed that intent all around the world, tirelessly seeking out new sounds and inspirations and creating a catalog of music unlike most anything else the world has ever heard. When Marja Burchard, Christan’s daughter, who grew up with Embryo and toured with them for years, took the reins of the ensemble after Christian’s death in 2018, she started recording what would become the album Auf Auf. It was recorded over the course of two years, finishing it in the throes of the Covid pandemic in 2020.

The Ronettes  You Bet I Would   Favoriting Silhouettes/You Bet I Would 7"  May Records  1962    This is a B side to the fantastic tune "Silhouettes" In this tune Ronnie growls and squeaks her way through this most expressive delivery...the queen of rock and roll displaying her grit and badass in the early days of the Ronettes...    1:46:27 (Pop-up)
Phương Tâm  Ai   Favoriting Hùng Cường - Ai 7"  Sóng Nhạc  1965    Much like the Ronettes as the good/bad girls. Phong Tam bucked the trend of "nice" Vietnamese girls, opting to sing in Saigon nightclubs. in the early 60's..performing original Vietnamese rock songs instead of covering popular songs of the day. She ended up emigrating to the US, and now lives in San Jose. Her own daughter had no idea that her mom was one of the first Vietnamese rock singers...an amazing story!    1:48:42 (Pop-up)
Jackie Shane  I've Really Got the Blues   Favoriting Money/I've Really Got The Blues 7"  Stop  1962    Jackie Shane proves on this tune she only needs a minute and a half to make a statement. This pioneering soulstress pushed boundaries both musically and as one of the first openly transgender individuals. Jackie found a home in Toronto, and we are proud to call her part of our musical history. Jackie and Ronnie have parallel stories, overcoming hardship and fighting for visibility and to be exactly who they were...strong, independent black women.    1:51:19 (Pop-up)
Dusty Springfield  You Don't Own Me   Favoriting A Girl Called Dusty  Philips  1964    This song was originally recorded and released in 1963 by Lesley Gore...but it's Dusty's version that truly shines. Embraced as a feminist anthem in a time when women were still considered the weaker sex, this powerhouse rendition is a fitting closer for the album, and one of Dusty's greatest performances. I would dearly have loved to hear Ronnie Spector sing this.    1:52:57 (Pop-up)
The Beach Boys  Don't Worry Baby   Favoriting Don't Worry Baby/I Get Around 7"  Capitol Records  1964    Brian Wilson's obsession with "Be My Baby" yielded one of the greatest pop tunes in the Beach Boys cannon. Brian Wilson wrote this for Ronnie, but in typical douchebag fashion, Phil Spector would not allow her to record it because he didn't write it. She did eventually cover it. If you want to see a few minutes of pure joy, watch Ronnie and Brian hanging out together. It makes me cry, it's so sweet: Video of Ronnie & Brian    1:55:27 (Pop-up)

Ronnie Spector & Joey Ramone  Bye Bye Baby   Favoriting She Talks To Rainbows  Kill Rock Stars  1999    Without Ronnie Spector, there would be no Ramones. In 1999, Joey Ramone produced "She Talks To Rainbows" with Ronnie, who covered two Ramones tunes, including this duet with Joey. Two years later, Joey would pass away of lymphoma. I like to think he was there to greet Ronnie when she arrived in Rock and Roll Heaven.    2:03:17 (Pop-up)
