Being an inveterate punster, it's surprising that I hadn't discovered and been drawn to the deep wit and wordplay of the great musical lyricists. Pretty sure it was no coincidence. Recently the NPR program 1A did an episode on Black classical composers, and this piece was cited. They might have played a portion of the symphony. My research led to another NPR presentation where a modern version of the symphony was broadcast. So it has been in the air, and that it surely behind my interest in this particular work. JSB:

Meanwhile, in 2020 Naxos released a recording of Negro Folk Symphony. Two reviewers for Fanfare put it on their "Want Lists" of year's best. Andrew Desiderio wrote, "The release of Naxos’s new recording of the Negro Folk Symphony (1934) is almost serendipitous in its timing. As racial tensions in the U.S. reach a flash point, the moment has come to start permanently recognizing and honoring the achievements and perspectives of Black musicians and composers, such as William Dawson and Ulysses Kay. Basing his work on authentic musical material, Dawson weaves a symphonic portrait of the African American experience, from the horrors of American slavery to the intoxicating dances and songs of African cultures. What also makes the Negro Folk Symphony so unique is the subtlety of Dawson’s craftsmanship, particularly in his development of familiar themes, which are rendered almost unrecognizable in their thoroughly symphonic fragmentation. In short, this is not a cookie-cutter piece in the manner of Dvořák’s 'New World' Symphony, but a strong and authentic utterance that deserves a place in the pantheon of American symphonies, alongside Ives’s Fourth, Copland’s Third, and Hanson’s Second. Also included are two superb orchestral works by Ulysses Kay, another significant African American composer: Fantasy Variations, which makes innovative and evocative use of the variation method; and Umbrian Scene, a wonderful work that is decidedly austere in its beauty. If there was ever a time for this disc to be released, this is it."
