Yes, Jeff, good call: Supersense. I really like the opening cut with Jason Moran whaling away at a prepared piano (or whacking the strings with something). Then the cuts have a tendency to sound alike.

DJpeterDE:
Mary Lou is enjoying somewhat of a resurgence with the new biography by Deanna Witkowski. (www.deannawitkowski.com). Her book is written from a very Catholic perspective. As if she is trying to have Williams recognized as a Saint, which, of course, she is. Not only is Witkowski a biographer of Mary Lou Williams, she is a pianist herself, performing as a sort of one-woman repertory band. I have my issues with her, but overall appreciate the work she is doing.

Mary Lou Williams' grave is five minutes from my house. When I met her (and got her autograph!) back in 1980 she seemed to me to be about 200 years old. But she was only 71 when she died about six months later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am
Jeff Golick:

Re this Claudia record: "The story of the album starts in 2017, when the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) outraged many by apparently banning seven words from use in their official documents: "evidence-based," "transgender," "entitlement," "fetus," "diversity," "science-based," and "vulnerable." It subsequently turned out the words were discouraged rather than banned, but by then the onslaught of the news cycle had already pushed the story out of public awareness. Hollenbeck paid attention."
Avatar 🦀 9:41am

Looked up the group to find the latest personnel. It seems strange that most members have been there from the beginning, but the piano/accordian player keeps changing. (Cue Spinal Tap drummer joke?)

I get it, @rw.

That Geerken website: "according to google and some pertinent reference books he died during his lifetime on 25th september 1984." I for one don't want to die during my lifetime. I have avoided it so far, and I see no reason to start now.

Seems to be something in the air recently JG. Hope you're doing alright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @rw. You, too.

@LG: That said, it would be nice to be able to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one's (alleged) passing, as he did.

Two names to research throughly: Hartmut Geerken and Deanna Witkowsk. I learn a lot listening to WFMU and DOR in particular.

The discogs page for Heliopolis includes the following credits for Geerken: "Piano, Marimba [Xylomarimba], Gong, Cymbal, Chimes [Tubular Chimes], Bells [Fire-brigade Bell, Camel Bells, Horse Bells], Temple Block, Bendir, Congas, Maracas, Performer [Thunder Sheet, Toy Car Producing The Sound Of A Siren], Design [Cover], Layout, Liner Notes"

what is the difference between camel bells and horse bells?
Avatar 🦀 11:34am

can't we just call them all ungulate bells
Avatar 🦀 11:35am
Listener Gregory:

@Jeff (11:24), true, but I would still prefer to die *after* my lifetime. I am shooting for about a week after, just to be sure there is no overlap.
Speaking of dying, I am leaving now, as we have what seems to be maybe the best weather of the autumn here, and I'm going to go out and enjoy it. Thanks, Jeff, and all who participate.

This is what we had Solo. A tamale on a bed of nopales y lentejas guisados, topped with with a big blob squashacado. Mexican hippie food.

@Listener Gregory: enjoy the outside! See you later.

i guess horses are odd toed ungulates and camels are even toed ones, so maybe the bells can't be grouped together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am

Looks delicious, @Franco.

@hyde: group them together??? You're asking for chaos!

Ken Vandermark & Nate Wooley recording was just a duo, the two over dubbing? The bandcamp page credits are confusing me. Maybe if i move from phone to computer I can sort it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Jeff Golick:

@WR: the notes to the Vandermark/Wooley record say "Recorded by Ken Vandermark and Nate Wooley at their homes, between June 8-16, 2021 " -- so overdubbing, yes!
