Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from November 5, 2021 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Winter of 2019-2020, I had to take care of my Mom's house, paying attention to cold snaps, and there was only one that worried me- in mid-February. In every other way it was just Fall all Winter.

It's a shame James Coburn didn't sing the songs in the Flint movies. That would have been something.

Technically, that should probably be "You Live Only Twice."

My parents had the Broadway (?) cast album of Stop the World I Want to Get Off, which I listened to heavily. There were 'adult themes' that I did not fully understand.

Wow, he did the lyrics for Goldfinger too! Man.
I also soaked myself in Doctor Doolittle as a child.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm

I knew all those Stop The World tunes too. There was going to be a production here a few years ago, but I think the plot does not wear well.
Avatar 🎭 7:28pm
Listener Gregory:

@Webhamster H, Yes, it was pretty sexist in its entire conception.
Bronwyn, if my memory serves, there is no reason to see the Flynn movies, except perhaps for camp enjoyment. But I wouldn't think they have become much more amusing over time.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Webhamster Henry:

The holy grail of unmade animated movies was a super Jazz cast version of Finian's Rainbow to be directed by John Hubley ... killed thanks to the Blacklist. (and Producers-like financing) en.wikipedia.org...

Medleys of this sort are good for reminding you of all the songs you’d rather hear than the medley. IMHO
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
doctorjazz:

When the medley was on, I told me wife that the medley would have been exhibit #1 for me in the 70s proving that show music sucked...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Lol I think sucking is kind of the point of Oil City Symphony (at least, I gathered that listening to the cast album recently). I THINK it was an early exercise in sucking ironically

Now that I see the cover, I realize that I rented 8 Femmes not too long ago. It is a murder mystery, in which the femmes are all suspects, if I remember correctly. Entertaining, I think.

Hey WR! I think she posted those on Instagram (she mostly posts on TicToc and Instagram, Rebecca Skowron). But she posts so many videos I those platforms, it's not easy to find anything particular, at least for me). She just reached 11k followers on TicToc. If I can get a specific link, I'll post it.

Avatar 🎭 8:46pm
Listener Gregory:

Darn, I wanted to break the tie and become the favoritest for once!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
doctorjazz:

And, to answer the question who likes what-NO ONE in the house tolerates "out" music, but Rebecca, my older daughter, likes most everything else I like. I've broken my wife in for most other stuff. My younger daughter likes any music...as long as it's punk-metal-pop (fortunately, I can get into much of that, until they go into "screamo" mode).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
doctorjazz:

The "bridge" betweenmy show music wife, and jazz/punk and everything else me, was the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald records, which started out as neutral, mutually acceptable listening, and got each of us to appreciate the other's taste.

Thanks for a great show, Bronwyn!

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Webhamster Henry:

Why ARE there so many songs about rainbows, and what's on the other side?
Avatar 🎭 8:56pm
Listener Gregory:

I just learned something. The pronunciation of "schoen" by the Andrews Sisters seems completely wrong, to my limited understanding of German. However, that title is a "Germanization" of a prior Yiddish song that was "sheyn [or shein]" rather than "schoen." So now it makes sense even if I don't understand why it was changed to no longer fit the song.
