Ochre Ogre...yes Mekas was an integral part of the NYC art/music/film fabric for many generations! Haynes dedicates the film to him. He also filmed LOADS of live VU footage at the Dom, Factory and elsewhere - including their first appearance at the psychiatrist convention - all footage is silent 16mm sadly I believe.

Great set so far. Todd Haynes is one of my all-time faves. He was such a gracious guest at the various events I met him at University of North Texas and in Dallas, geez, last century. The split-screens and nonmatching music over vintage footage in the VU movie reminds me of Todd's direction in The Karen Carpenter Story. Looking forward to TOPT's always insightful discussion with him.

No, "Ostrich" guitar (all tuned to the same note" was a specialty tuning for a few songs like Venus in Furs. He wrote songs mostly in the D tuning

NYPL still has Lou Reed's archives. Lots of letters and personal artwork. Saw a letter Paul McCartney wrote Lou, giving him a copy of then new Flaming Pie. Also a very apologetic letter Yule wrote Lou in the early 90s.

Trade-off exemplified: This clearly compelling documentary walled off by Apple in its own ecosystem rather than interested people being able to find it through platforms they might want to support. Though I think the doc is playing in Manhattan still, and other places, if one is close enough to those places to take advantage.

Great to hear Todd talking about this! We were in the same dorm and many of the same classes in our freshman year at college, and we shared music a lot. A couple years later, I called him early in the morning while playing the Velvets, and was momentarily confused when the song ended but I still heard it through the phone. He was listening to the same song!

I'd swear I read a thing with Lou where he said people didn't even realize what a loss breaking up the Lennon-McCartney writing partnership was. As a Songwriter - not hard to imagine Lou having that perspective. In the actual 60s when both bands were going concerns - more likely everybody wanted to make claims for their own unique islands... Other things where Lou said Lennon only sometimes seemed relevant as a Writer to him - but one or two things very much so...

Lou talked lotsa shit about Zappa but then wound up inducting him into the R&R Hall of Fame. He also put Dylan down continually, but then did that great “Foot of Pride” at Dyan’s 30th anniversary bash. I don’t think we can take the stuff he said about the competition when he was young and hungry as the last word.

When I first heard a VU doc was in the works I thought it was going to turn out rather tepid. When i learned Todd Haynes was at the helm I knew it was in good hands. I was at a Lou CD or book signing at Borders at WTC in the late 90s. I got on line and met him for a few moments- he was so kind to answer my silly questions. Thanks for all this today Todd!
