Last night per usual Jesse Jarnow played some songs that were beyond the pail when it comes to the topic at hand. I tried an experiment - could I go from zero to sixty if I smoked a hash joint quickly without pause and then put on the head phones?

Pardon if more for the Explorers' Room board...
How much was 'Psych' an inevitable technical media transition ? Like the Long Player itself...
Consider say - TheFlamingo's 'I Only Have Eyes For You' track in 1959 (ironically - an older Show Tune)...
Been noted that the earliest Psych trax proper leaned towards Novelty - they cite 'My Friend Jack' by TheSmoke for this... Roger McGuinn noted : 'Greenwich Village became The World'...

Not intentionally!

Gary:

Oh, Tim! I should send you all I have of them ... they're pretty terrific
Avatar 7:22pm

Revrab - "inevitable technical media transition" sounds like a psych title from '68, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

Or a lost Stereolab single
Avatar 7:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Brian Wilson in Los Angeles was steeped in Lounge & Exotica technique. TheBeatles' George Martin had worked in absurdist Comedy & was simpatico with the electronically avant Radiophonic Workshop... I love how Os Mutantes reportedly didn't know about recording cymbals backwards - so they sprayed aerosols near microphones instead...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Gary:

Haha, I didn't know that about Os Mutantes, RevRab
Avatar 7:27pm
tim abdellah:

Good questions RevRab. Is a psychedelic record one that uses technical manipulation to achieve something not typically heard in the "normal" audioscape? And hence signifying something from another/altered reality?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Gary:

I would say yes, Tim, but I wonder if it's more often a more narrowly defined genre (or subgenre)
Avatar 7:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robyn Hitchcock has said he identifies really as a Surrealistic. Which is perhaps distinct - but likewise implies a state more than a specific aesthetic. Altho' I'm making an argument for aesthetic prior to or distinct from the state. Tho' Joe Meek say was clearly whacked...

@Gary - Yeah for sure. Like the Radiophonic Workshop or experimental things coming out of the European art/classical music traditions aren't really considered "Psychedelic", are they?
Avatar 7:35pm
TDK60:

I have a an old pal like that, Gary. Ran a record shop. To him, it's music related to the psychedelic experience and in that '60s-'70s time period, or referencing it. I took a wider view, played him some Godspeed You Black Emperor that feels psych (tho not intended as such maybe.) He was unmoved. Hee...
Avatar 7:36pm

Right. When the state became unfashionable - perhaps the techniques &/or aesthetics remained...

I just walked in the kitchen to get some juice and ask Chresti what she wanted to eat. She said she just ate part of a hash brownie and then told me about a drug dealer that show up at this party house with a briefcase full of drugs. Then she started eating a plum and laughing! Underneath, Gary was parsing the parameters of Psych. We point mirrors at mirrors over here.
Avatar 7:40pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Then there's the International aspect of it. The Drummer Stream has really opened my eyes to the reality of what was happening with Bollywood & Asia - while TheBeatles receive endless credit for blending Rawk~Pop & Eastern Musics even the smallest amount by 1965~6 !
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
PaulRobeson1920:

Psychedelic music is not, is not…
Easier to say what it is not than what IT is

It’s Rock & Roll!!! “It’s been said before but it’s a never been told!”

To me psychedelic music is-
“You know, you must take a look at the new land
The swimming pool and the teeth of your friend
The dirt in my hand
You know, you must take a look at me…
Baby, baby, I love you! You do!”

My uncle hit a dear going over the Grapevine and killed it. He threw it in the back of his truck and continued on this way. He had a grocery store in the San Joaquin Valley that had a butcher department in the back, so they cut up the dear and cooked it. One day he was looking for the guy who was supposed to be working the register. He found him in a dark corner sitting on a stool eating a whole haunch of venison. When my uncle asked him why he wasn't minding the store he said "i No Me Molestes! with chunks of dear meat falling out of his mouth. I saw this happen!
