Yeah, he was 58 when I was born, so I was a little late on the scene. Youngest of three by eleven and thirteen years. He was definitely a scenester before he was with my mom -- friends with Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington at various points. They left Manhattan in '61: my dad worked at bars and restaurants in the Village and was still following the music scene there and told me he had noticed it was starting to get pretty weird!

When I first came to NY in '93, there were still places in the village where he had worked and where I could get a free meal by mentioning his name.

Mr. Bodah does have a way with that sort of thing. One night I saw from the playlist that the set included one whose title was ABSOLUTELY FILTHY, and I wondered how he was going to negotiate that. He back announced, digressed increasingly, and by the time he got to where that one would've been, he talked long enough that everyone could forget about it. Brilliant!
