Bley is not one to look backward. There is always so much more onrushing to investigate. That said, she often does revisit older compositions. It would be interesting to study how never performances of older compositions differ in context of a matured approach.

That European music hall/oom-pah sound finds its way into so much of Carla's writing. She was larglely self-taught as a pianist (and totally self-taught as a composer), but her first influence was her father, Emil Borg, who was a Swiss (Swedish?) immigrant.

Burlesque, wild, some emphasis on beat 2 and 4 (the oom-pah), much counterpoint, new things introduced out of nowhere, some craziness. She did smooth some of that over over the years (not that that was a bad thing, but the flavor mellowed a bit. Which, I suppose, many of us do over the years...)

Carla's difficult-listening projects from the 70s are really interesting too. SILENCE, the Harold Pinter play inspired album, with Kevin Coyne and Robert Wyatt is so depressing that it's punk. Carla talks of receiving the phone call from Charlie Haden's wife, Ruth, informing her that he had died. Carla was in her garden when she got the call.
