Intro by the creator/producer of the KALX 1986 Best of the Bay Rap Contest

1986 | Upon noticing the unstoppable rise of a new musical movement (one that was dismissed as a novelty by the tastemakers of popular music & culture) in Oakland and the rest of the Bay Area I decided to put together a rap contest on my then radio station KALX 90.7FM in Berkeley - It was a very detailed and time consuming undertaking that took me a couple of months work to put together all the details on -such as approaching Fantasy Records and Whole Earth Access and The PROS and putting together the panel of judges -not to mention traveling all over the East Bay and SF with my GF JoAnn to put up the flyer I made for the rap contest - but the time consuming project that I took upon myself to do as a volunteer at the UC Berkeley radio station ultimately would turn out to be very rewarding from both a personal standpoint as a fan of the music & culture and from a career perspective as it taught me so many aspects of the music business - something I didn't realize at the time - good times that I was blessed to be in the center of! |
