FREEZE! Welcome to my special Miami Vice themed show. Aside from the obvious Jan Hammer jams, I'll be showcasing some of the other amazing music played in the background of this iconic show. Whoever music supervised this really had good taste on cutting edge (and popular) music of that time. Get your linen suits out and time warp back to 80s with Crockett and Tubbs!

Is that a Crockett in your pocket?

Flashback to watching in high school, probably the last time I saw an episode.
Avatar 12:16pm
Ursula1000:

Hiya Otis! We went thru a binge about 4 years ago and watched it from start to finish...REALLY holds up! Super dark. And Sonny Crockett is a super intricate character.
Avatar 12:18pm
Otis Fodder:

I would love to do that too. We would dig it. I loved the show and you are so correct, music supervision was so spot on, forward-thinking for the time. I have memories of how popular the music was as an integral part of the show. Cool theme idea today!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Feldpausch:

I watched some of the earlier episodes and could watch the wheel-shots of that Ferrari Spyder driving to music all day long
Avatar 12:19pm

thanks Otis--knew I was gonna be in Miami so I thought why not! ;)

my older brother drove me to the Paramount in downtown Portland but had to listen to him editorialize about how 'weird' and 'fruity' he thought all the other attendees in the queue looked.
Avatar 12:40pm
Ursula1000:

haha I wonder my sister thought! she was pretty open minded though. But still....DEVO! Nothing ordinary about that!
Avatar 12:41pm
Ursula1000:

the feel of this song really encapsulates a lot of the episodes endings---very moody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm

Cry what a cool song.

I have a Gut Feeling that principal was a hoser
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
solo mon:

I was obsessed w Devo and would write their slogans on my clothes, trapper keeper etc, I would also tell the other kids on recess about Devo the final straw was me teaching other kids the the Barbie doll part of speed racer at recess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

I got into a school yard fistfight with an old friend for me liking that 'queer band' Devo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
D Rok:

trapper keeper... Man those are two words that instantly evoke very specific memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

I also remember in Jr. high, if you didn't have a big feathered hair helmet and stupid looking designer jeans, etc, people would yell DEVO at you from moving cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
solo mon:

It was a huge scandal that all the kids we’re jump roping in the school yard and chanting “Im a Barbie doll and I like sex!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
RevWaldo:

The girl yelling? Also Don Johnson. True story.
Avatar 12:48pm
Ursula1000:

they sold these sleeveless TURTLENECK tees at that New Traditionalists concert---I got one and that shirt was SO weird it was beyond bullying material---too mind blowing! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

I remember Devo becoming shorthand for 'New Wave' or, god forbid 'Punk' and an insult in my town.
Avatar 12:49pm
Ursula1000:

Solo---that scene needs to be in the next Stranger Things season
Avatar 12:49pm
Ursula1000:

OK now I know WFMU may have a strict no Eagles policy but...I have to play this next one
  12:50pm
Kat in Chicago:

Necessary exception
Avatar 12:51pm
Otis Fodder:

For a moment I thought this was STEAMR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

Yeah. Aren't the Stranger Things kids pushing 30 now? It would be cool to see them in the middle of the weird 'Punker' violence/suburban acceptance thing. Was so weird to see these really normal looky-loo type kids showing up at hardcore shows in the mid 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

I think it's a strike thing, Ursula. They have to catch you but I think you have three strikes.
Avatar 12:52pm

haha Otis!

Solo and Rich, I’m glad you survived your youthful Devo fandom! Haha, STEAMR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Rich in a Plastic Pompadour:

oh god. this song. I've got this and a few others on the chopping block for a project. THis instantaneously transports me back to high school.
Avatar 12:55pm
Ursula1000:

def has that Pink Floyd vibe from that era
  12:56pm
Kat in Chicago:

I remember getting “B52’s” yelled at me! And “Gary Numan” when I buzzed my hair at one point (I was going for Robert Fripp actually)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Rich cutting all the sleeves off his Ts now:

It's funny. I outgrew Devo after getting into Punk and Post Punk but when those Hardcore Devo comps came out in the late 80s it completely reignited my love for all things Devo.
Plus, I feel like we're living in the world they predicted.
Avatar 12:57pm
Ursula1000:

DEVO were/are definitely seers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Rich cutting all the sleeves off his Ts now:

I just pretend those later 80s and 90s albums never happened. Not canon!
  12:58pm
Kat in Chicago:

My roommates and I in the early 80s went through a phase where we would cut up and draw on our clothes as preparation to go out. And we changed our hair all the time. Bucket of Basic White in the bathroom
Avatar 12:59pm
Ursula1000:

I kinda cut it off at Oh No It's Devo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm

Haha I was so into oh no and new traditionalists,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm

Oh No sort of killed it for me too. And that tour, while fun, was just kind of dull, full of dumb jock kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Rich raiding Army/Navy surplus store 4 clothing:

and then that odious Dr. Detroit single. Done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm

I think the spudboys had some serious bills to pay by that point.

I think the first four, five Peter Gabriel LPs are just untouchable. So good.
Avatar 1:03pm

  1:03pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yes, Rich, army surplus stores and Amvets thrifts (which are all now Village Discount-branded and for profit afaik)
  1:05pm

I loved those Peter Gabriel albums too. Third one was hugely influential to me
Avatar 1:09pm

I used to play Black Celebration on 45rpm years back. A whole new record. So happy.
Avatar 1:10pm
Ursula1000:

the title track Otis?
Avatar 1:11pm
Otis Fodder:

We used to play the whole album, with roommates that way. It was a long time ago. Did that with a lot of records that were dark and super poppy singles at 33rpm. Usual bored at home stuff on a couch.
Avatar 1:12pm
Ursula1000:

gotta try that! Madonna's Lucky Star on 33 is pretty excellent
Avatar 1:13pm

Françoise Hardy singles at 33 are an all time fav.

Miami Vice actually played the Below The Belt remix of this for the show but it was too long to add for this episode so I stuck w the album version--but yeah, killer remixes!

He played on some classic, groundbreaking albums, with Eno, Fripp, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
