saw him once at the Greek Theatre in hollywood with the Pogues (who I really wanted to see, but showed up MacGowan-less) in fall 1989. I don’t remember too well, but I recall a few interesting versions of old tunes (and being uncertain about GE Smith, who I only knew from his hammy saturday night live gig)
  9:59pm

Yeah funny I also only really knew of GE Smith as the "SNL Guy" for a good while before learning he was part of the prime Hall & Oates era

Barney Grubbs: GE Smith and that Amish-beard bass player from the SNL band were also in Hall & Oates's band. You can see them in some of the videos, like "Maneater."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Steve from Dunwoody:

Saw him in the 80s in Louisville with a banged-up (as Jones would say) Steve Earle opening. Have seen him three times in ATL in last 20 years: at Ga Tech with a pissed-off Joni Mitchell opening, up in Gwinnett County with solo Elvis Costello opening, and at the Fabulous Fox Theater with just His Band. Guy on a darkened stage with an amazing band playing jump blues. Hoo yeah!

@mariano I think Joni must go through phases of being PO'd about her rep. She can't be that way all the time. At that time her angry objects were the young female hit-makers of the 80s who were not appropriately recognizing her trail-blazing amaze-a-tude that had benefitted all of 'em....I didn't like her lectures at the time but later reflection led me to conclude she had a point -- culturally she should loom larger.

BobOnStatenIsland:

Barney Grubbs, that bass player was T Bone Wolk, who auditioned for Dylan, along with G.E. Smith and Chris Parker (the core SNL band at the time, 1987), and, yes, along with Smith, a longtime member of Hall & Oates backup band. T Bone, however, did not tour with Dylan, although Smith did, as well as Parker.
Dylan had no idea who they were when they auditioned for him, but, they were working well with him, which is difficult do.
I know this because I was the 5th guy in that room and informed Bob of who those musicians were when he finished my opinion of how they sounded that evening.
There's a video on YouTube of G.E. Smith talking about that night. Unfortunately, he makes a lot of stuff up, or maybe has a very bad memory, either way, he pissed me off no end.
Anyway, I convinced Bob to have them back again and give them a chance. The rest is, well, The Perpetual Tour.
I have some tapes from that night. Fun stuff.
