Handy Haversack:

Wow, KimSorise I had no idea that *Oaks Day* was such a holiday! Schools closed! Amazing.

We used to go to Belmont every year on Kentucky Derby Day and on my birthday. Good memories of it, but I eventually decided I couldn't do it anymore. But my dad was a handicapper, and I miss it every summer.

We once drove to Louisville from Atlanta, my dad intending to stay a week (or more if he got really hot) and make us enough money to get by for a year or so. But the only Racing Form he could get in ATL did not cover Churchill, and when we got there and asked about shuttles to the track at the motel, we learned the meet would not start for three months. You could see his heart kind of break. We had a nice lunch, got back in the car, and drove back home. Three months later, we didn't have enough money to drive back.

But I did taste shrimp for the first time!

Not long after, a track opened in Birmingham that we would go to on Saturdays, but he always said his system needed better horses, and that track had very cheap horses indeed. Still, there were a few big days and celebrations, and it was time together. That track changed to dog racing after a few years, though, and that was it for his gambling.

He had worked as a hot walker at Belmont in the fifties and loved everything about horse racing, which I still really feel, but I just can't support the industry anymore, I decided. Lifetime positive at Belmont, though!

My favorite war story from New Mexico happened about 30 years ago. I was working on a contract in El Paso and a good buddy of mine was working a job up in the northern part of New Mexico. We decided to meet in Truth or Consequences NM for dinner one Saturday since it was kind of in the middle and had a great name. We meet up in the middle of town and my buddy Hal announces he can detect the most authentic Mexican restaurant by just walking down the street and smelling the aromas coming out of the kitchen vent fans. One of them gets his seal of approval, and we go in and enjoy our authentic Mexican meal. When we were done, Hal asked the waiter if he could meet the chef to give our compliments. The waiter agrees and a couple minutes later a rotund 60-ish blonde woman with a thick German accent came out and introduced herself as the chef. Turns out she married some Army guy when he was stationed in Kaiserslautern and came with him to Fort Bliss in El Paso. When he retired they moved to TorC and opened a restaurant. German food kind of flopped there so she shifted to Mexican food and years later Hal lost all his credibility

no loss of credibility there at all, @Phillippe - one doesn't have to be from a certain country or region to produce authentic cuisine from there (as attested by the many "ethnic" restaurants in NYC that put out barely edible fast-food quality crap for us to eat, even if sometimes very expensive and fancily named).

and sometimes we find truly excellent restaurants run by people with background very incongruous to the food they're serving... on a trip to Milan a few years back (which is full of mediocre Italian restaurants btw) I stumbled across this Korean-run place that was basically the "it" restaurant of the neighborhood (always packed, nothing fancy, just down-to-business awesome Italian food)

Hey everyone! I will be filling in for Explorers Room tonight on the Drummer Stream. For three hours, 7-10pm (ET), I will be playing one track from each program aired on the stream during the past week. I have already selected the track from today's episode of Continental Subway. Tune in later and find out which one!

The party will be here: wfmu.org...

Yeah Django was a Gypsy - Romanian I guess I should say - & caught in a caravan fire. Left with two fretting fingers essentially. Forced him to pioneer a more lyrical Lead type playing & fewer chords - ahead of amplification for guitar when that would really start to make more sense. Utterly amazing really. Iommi lost fingertips in a factory accident - & replaced them with prosthetics. & tuning way down with very thin strings - which turned out to be pioneering steps for Metal...
