Sure sign of spring: Our indoor/outdoor cat is back to spending her nights outside. Every morning she leaves us just a few feathers and bird innards for us to admire on our back porch. It's fascinating and tiresome.

Made my first in person outing to a record store yesterday, Double Decker Records, since March 2020 (masked, distanced, vaccinated). Nice store, whoda' thunk it, in Allentown, Pa (bit over an hour drive from Chez Doctorjazz). One bad thing about the current "vinyl revival", LPs are much more expensive than they were...Fun, though!

Fred, picked up some nice reissues (I'm an audiophile geek; but with premium reissued vinyl starting around $30, and Going up inner $100 per album, the number of albums purchased shrinks drastically. I remember shopping at Probation Record Exchange and not being to carry stuff I picked out. Not so, yesterday, but it was fun).

@doctorjazz: Re the Air performance: the NY Times had a article the day before explaining that Air sometimes played ragtime music (which is indeed true). Apparently many neophytes had read this article and concluded that Air was a ragtime band. Air played a great set, but afterwards many people were mumbling to themselves “that’s not ragtime…”

I posted this before, but I recall a Cecil Taylor concert. The Times had featured it, saying CT had mellowed, allowing dynamics both soft and loud rather than his usual total assault. I figured it was hopeless getting in, but figured I'd give it a shot. Got to the Village club, line down the block, got on it, it kept moving. Turned out the article was correct, but the soft sections were as much CT as the louder ones;people stayed for a short while, got up and left, and more got seated. I eventually got front row seats.

I know, Dean, there was a lot of great music in Detroit, but by the mid-70s, the radio scene had degenerated into a major label drugola-fuelled pile of crap--Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx--all the worst shit you could imagine, that was all they ever played. No Stooges, no MC5, EVER. If you were lucky you'd get an Alice cut now and then.

Late '70s radio in LA was good, relatively speaking. There was the youthful KROQ, which not long thereafter turned into the same pile of crap, though the programming was different. Long Beach had a station with a killer progressive rock show. Then there was KPFK and, to some extent, KCRW and KPCC. KPFK has had its ups and downs, due to the assholes who want to turn it into NPR bougie bullshit. At one time they had two shows devoted to Pan Africanism and a four hour opera show. No more.

  11:16am
Mark R:

Dean, I think it was at KROQ where my friend Dan Carlisle was on the air the day Elvis died, and they literally had no Elvis albums in the library, and he shouted to the program director, "Where are all the Elvis albums?" and the program director yelled back, "We don't have any" and Dan said, "Well, you'd better get your ass down to Tower Records and buy some, cuz he just DIED!" Imagine a rock and roll station with no Elvis albums. That's like a jazz station with no Louis Armstrong or something.
  11:17am

I enjoyed late 90s KCRW music shows when I lived out there, Dean. I got turned on to a lot of good stuff.

Boy do we have a stash of Jandek records! I never heard of the guy before I went in that library. Dylan's released about 10 albums since the emergency death tape was made, so we'll still have to improvise.

I was working on a project in L.A. a number of years ago, and one of the crew told me that Arthur Lee had somehow gotten the idea that he was Arthur's son (he wasn't), but from time to time Arthur would check up on him--"How you eatin', you stayin' off drugs," etc. Arthur was a real trip. I got turned on to "Forever Changes" very late in the game, and when I discovered it, I played it just about every day for about three months. I still think it's one of the most amazing records ever.

The reason he sauntered in is, he was giving drum lessons at a nearby music store.

I have seen the WFMU library's Jandek selection. (Too big in my opinion.) They need more Kinks.

I was music director at WUVT, to which Corwood sent *two* vinyl copies of each release. It’s as if he knew, and had decided to take care of me.

@Stork: my introduction to Jandek was a show where the DJ played as many of his records at once as he could (maybe something from the WFMU blog)

I've honestly never heard that Elvis song before--it sounds like they speeded up the tape a little to make his voice higher.

@Artie: He sells mostly used gear, some of it "vintage." The guy's really cool. He recorded Hendrix, unreleased until Martin Scorsese asked him to include it on a Blues series he issued. And he was one of the engineers on Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus.

That Swingin' Neckbreakers tune sounds a lot like Channel 3's "You Make Me Feel Cheap."

The Led Zeppelin seems a bit out of character.... But hey... This is WFMU, right?
  11:45am
Mark R:

I feel exactly the same way Rev. Rabbit. BTW anybody who says nobody influenced them is full of shit. Really, that's a pretty arrogant thing to say, don't you think? Yeah, you just INVENTED this shit you're playing, you never listened to the radio or played a record in your life. I can see an honest answer being more like, "Well, we listened to them and them and them and we tried to play like them but it always came out sounding like us." But don't try to peddle that "nobody influeneced me" bullshit here, sweetheart. BTW I love S-K.

i just watched the clip of Ornette and Prime Time on SNL the other day. cracks me up that the host was Milton Berle
  11:50am
Mark R:

I saw Ornette play this shit at a beautiful theatre in Ann Arbor--double basses, double guitars, double drums. I was tripping my balls off, plus I drank like 6 beers in a half hour on the drive there, sitting in the back of a van with no seats. I remember Ornette was wearing this suit that looked like it was made of mirrors, the spotlight just reflecting a million different beams off of him (no it wasn't the drugs). Was absolutely paralyzed by the sound.
