Hello, all! Can anyone ID today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes? Hint: It's a fairly well known British prog album. If you know it, it'll be very easy to recognize.

'Tamp' seems close to 'stamp' word-wise. Yes coel, I used a manual tamper when helping a landscape gardener once.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape is dolbyized, but as is so often the case, the dolby doesn't really work. The music sounds too dull and muffled with dolby on, so I decided to go dolbyless, hiss be damned. This is Tape Hiss, after all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Sem:

Thiss hisss the Hiss!
Avatar 1:37pm
TDK60:

Tony: I've /always/ disliked the Dolby function. Never used it. Too muffled. I'll take the hiss so I can at least hear the music, with some treble.

TDK60:

Tony, do you have a fancy cassette deck? Would revealing to us its make be okay? (I'm not a stereo gearhead just an old tape guy, who has to buy a new cassette deck every 8 years or so. Maybe I'd spend a few more dollars next time.)
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Not fancy, no. Maybe the lower end of mid-range. It's a Tascam 202 mk V (which I would never remember if it wasn't in front of me -- I'm very much not a gearhead.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
David (in London):

TDK, I bought my son his first stereo system last year, and I made sure it had a tape deck so that he got the full spectrum of formats.

Actually, a lot of young, underground bands in the UK are releasing stuff on tape again, as it's affordable and easily replicated. So, there's quite the quiet scene going on now. I would guess the same is happening in the US?
Avatar 2:16pm
TDK60:

Thanks, Tony. David, I'm lightly familiar with the latter day underground punk and indie rock scenes a bit, and have been to some such gigs. On the "mersh" table there are always cassettes, along with records.
Avatar 2:21pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, I just said (on mic) that I don't normally play very recent releases on Tape Hiss. That's because I play whole tapes -- which somehow seems uncalled for when the tape just came out out and can still be easily gotten.
Avatar 2:23pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape, though, is an edition of 50, and hasn't been released digitally as well (I don't think) ... so, it's eligible.
Avatar 2:30pm
TDK60:

I still have my old tape collection (600-700 tapes?). Most older tapes from the '70s/early '80s died but I still have cassettes from the mid-'80s working! I still tape albums but not as much. I keep tapes around with stuff on them I don't like, in order to quickly grab to record something off radio that I couldn't otherwise save. This usually means it not being WFMU since we have the great Archive; it's for other radio stations. Last week I found a bunch of tapes with music on them I'm not interested in. Saved for those quick radio times. By the way, interesting music here, Tony.

I once repaired an LP under a microscope. Fritz Reiner's recording with CSO of Ravel's Valses Nobles Et Sentimentales has a sour note from a French horn, so I took a needle and tinkered with the groove to render the horn in tune.
