Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

So many lines from 1776 still resonate today! It also weirdly predicted the drama of the 2020 election, with a lot of the same states playing the same roles, and the whole thing hinging on Georgia flipping at the last minute!!

One of the comments on the YouTube video I pulled this from says "I love you forever and always 1921. I miss you forever and always 1921." Which implies that one of the oldest people in the world is listening to Al Jolson on YouTube
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Lizzie, I highly recommend the 1776 film (even though it was a flop at the time.) It's one of the best musicals ever and the performances are amazing! (But then check out the cast album for a much better-sung version of He Plays the Violin, as much as I like Blythe Danner)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Thanks for the tip! Very cool about the old person watching Al on YouTube.

When I was a kid they still showed old cartoons from the 30s and 40s and I remember lots of parodies of what I later figured out was Al Jolson.

From DJ MAC on Facebook:
I’m looking for help to either prove or disprove the last sentence of the following statement.
On October 15, 1900, Bert Williams and George Walker opened their new show “Sons of Ham” at The Star Theatre located at 13th Street and Broadway in New York City. Due to their great success, others recorded songs from the show. In 1901, Bert and George were offered the opportunity to record songs from the show by The Victor Talking Machine Company.
This would make these THE FIRST ORIGINAL CAST RECORDINGS from a Broadway show ever.

it turns out the "The Fortune Teller" operatta with Alice Nielsen beat it out at 1898

@Sweet Corn Lizzie: Yep, that was me. I barely got through a half then. When I had my own garden in Gainesville, I had 9 foot chili plants, and would eat the same peppers all the time w/ no ill effect.

I once learned Patinkin's "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" to impress myself. I was crushing hard at the time.

What were the Mandy children like? Unruly or ruly?

Bronwyn Bishop:

I think they were probably pretty good kids, because my mom seemed to have a really good experience working for them and said Mandy and Kathryn were incredibly nice (Mandy has a reputation for being difficult, but seemingly only to people he's working with in a production)

Thanks! That's cool. Caring too much has a bad name. Have the most beautiful weekend of weekends!
