Early Cher > later Cher.
Early Rod > later Rod.
As testified to here this day.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Jeff Ash:

Found it in Maryland last summer. I never see any Solomon Burke records in Wisconsin.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Funky16Corners:

It may be the only one of his later albums I've found out in the wild. His early stuff is around but it was in print for a long time, especially after the British Invasion groups started to cover his songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s funny that you call 69 a later album for Solomon considering he kept releasing albums regularly until he passed in 2010.
Avatar 3:44pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

THIS tune! <3
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Funky16Corners:

"Late" for me, in the classic soul era. He was even dabbling in far out stuff like 'Generation of Revelation' in the late 60s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Funky16Corners:

@Vincent - Yeah, the ONLY Ace Cannon record that sounds like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

I knew what you meant Larry but it still made me chuckle

Love Spanky and Our Gang!
Avatar 3:50pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

@Larry - I know you've heard Soul For Sale... that one is just a little bit better imo. Thank you for Spanky too :)
Avatar 🥁 3:51pm
Erica:

Haven't heard this one for a while.
Avatar 3:54pm
still b/p:

Is it just my longtime pleasant response/associations that bias my favorable hearing of it, or does Lazy Day seem like a song that could've been too saccharine and dreadful in other hands and with a different arrangement?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - I think you're onto something there. Spanky et al had a very specific and unusual vibe that was sunshine poppy, show tuney, folky etc and they really carry it off on that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Little Danny:

Hi Larry, hi all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Brian in UK:

still/bp sunshine pop is a term that I feel could never be applied to Spanky. Much more.
Oh Larry you got it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Danny!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - IMHO Spanky and Our Gang are one of the most underestimated groups of the 60s. Their albums are really interesting, with an unusual mix of material and sound that manages at time to be psychedelic without any of the cliched trapping of the psychedelia of the era
Avatar 🥁 4:01pm

@ Larry, I realized I don't know anything about Spanky and our Gang and will certainly check them out some more.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Brian in UK:

Oh man, this Eric Matthews still sounds soooo good.
He also adds some cool trumpet on Tathiti 80's 'Wallpaper For the Soul'.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Funky16Corners:

@Rick - If you can find the albums I think you'll dig them.
Avatar 🥁 4:07pm
Erica:

Hey doc. You made it to the 2nd half of the show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - Despite his devolution into MAGA-adjacent. that first Eric Matthews album remains a firm favorite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Little Danny:

Wow, that Little Melvin was really something.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Funky16Corners:

Indeed, not sure of its origin. Passed to me by a friend years ago.
Avatar 4:11pm
still b/p:

If you assess particular bands and songs with a checklist of sunshine pop characteristics, you can get "yes, yes and yes." But the enjoyed result still can be a big summary "no, it's not thin, dismissable, cloying fluff."
Some relevant interesting sets could be put together for a show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Looks like a Baltimore 45

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

They were reverse haircut punks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
