[Note for Jeff Golick: I went to that show with old friend Ivan Moses!] Speaking of which, today is Max Roach's 97th birthday. I remember reading an interview about it, and reporters kept asking him about the money, and he would talk about combining poetry with music or something. He wouldn't say a word about losing the money. It was priceless.

	11:46am Gerry from Miami: The ripoff story is true. But I think he was doing OK before the grant was awarded. Maybe other listeners have more detailed information. Saw Cecil at Royce Hall, UCLA, late 70s. Raphe Malik, David Ware, forget who on drums. No bassist, I think. Too long ago. But I attended this concert with my friend, many-time Down Beat Magazine Critics' Poll and Readers' Poll winner on flute, James Newton. We got to go into the dressing room afterward where Mr. Taylor was desperate for a menthol cigarette. The whole band was exhausted from a very intense set. I can attest that most of the audience was as well.

Saw Cecil at Royce Hall, UCLA, late 70s. Raphe Malik, David Ware, forget who on drums. No bassist, I think. Too long ago. But I attended this concert with my friend, many-time Down Beat Magazine Critics' Poll and Readers' Poll winner on flute, James Newton. We got to go into the dressing room afterward where Mr. Taylor was desperate for a menthol cigarette. The whole band was exhausted from a very intense set. I can attest that most of the audience was as well.
