Hey WR, Julie P, Gina and bigplanetnoise! Happy BowieBarrettDenny birthday.

Irene - is there cake? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
northguineahills:

Bowie's Blackstar is a rare example of an amazing late last album. (Leonard Cohen's "You Want it Darker" also comes to mind).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Julie:

lazarus is streaming this weekend too, watching it right after the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm

I never get tired of this album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Irene Trudel:

Oops, I heard cake and forgot to post the first song. But you all knew it was Bowie's Blackstar. :D Julie, thanks for mentioning Lazarus. Peter and I watched it last night. It's available on dice.fm.

me too, watching Lazarus tonight.

Sandy!

Dean:

Images of Syd Barrett always make him like somebody else: a Replacement, Jeff Beck, Sylvain Sylvain, an amalgamation of Faces...
  7:17pm
Dean:

^look like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Julie:

interesting, he always looks like Syd to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Irene Trudel:

I'll say, Lazarus didn't entirely work for me. But Michael C. Hall was amazing. The songs were great in that context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Irene Trudel:

Dean, Syd was a man of many faces.
  7:21pm
Dean:

Julie: I learned today of a piece of so-called classical music by a French composer living in Germany, Fabrice Bollon. It's called Your Voice Out of the Lamb for Recorders, Keyboards, Cello and Orchestra, based in some vague way on TLLDOB. I catch a whiff of the "original" in one or two of the movements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Julie:

yeah the story is ???? But the music and Michael (and Sophie too) fantastic
  7:21pm
Dean:

Oops, wasn't explicit: the Bollon is based on the work of Genesis.

Hi Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Julie:

ha Dean that's awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
WR:

dean, all here knew what TLLDOB you were referring to, with the clue if "Lamb" in the title of the Bollon piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Julie:

Syd was a year older than Sandy. That I didn't expect.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
doctorjazz:

Denny has such a voice, gets right to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Irene Trudel:

Welcome doctorjazz! Julie, both Sandy and Syd were tragic in different ways. But both had the the same birthday
  7:28pm
Dean:

To my knowledge, I first heard Fairport Convention c. '78, a copy of Fairport Chronicles checked out from the public library, prompted I think by a friend who was into them and Steeleye Span.

I loved how Sandy Denny was inclined on moment's notice to break into gospel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Julie P.:

Oops, the robot is playing tricks again!

(Stream broke in there for a few seconds.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Gina Bacon:

I had issues too, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
northguineahills:

@Irene: My computer froze at the same time!

@Dean: I didn't hear Fairport until 2000, when I picked up Unhalfbricking after reading an article about them....
  7:33pm
Dean:

Bowie gone five years?! And Jimmy LaFave gone going on four. I really wish WFMU would devote more time to LaFave.
  7:34pm
Dean:

Maybe Pink Floyd had not Latinate pretensions? Astronomy Do Mine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
northguineahills:

(I even did a drum & bass remix of Matty Groves that March).
  7:36pm
Dean:

First Bowie album I heard beginning to end was also c/o a library, in this case the high school's. It was Space Odyssey.
  7:38pm
Dean:

Odyssey. Man, am I not focused this evening. Like Lamb, you all know what I meant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Irene Trudel:

I discovered Bowie first, with Space Oddity, Fairport 1st on A&M Records came next, then Pink Floyd/Barrett pretty much at the same time, which was the early 70s. Their music all holds up well for me to this day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
northguineahills:

I picked up Space Oddity randomly in '94 in HS. Little did I know, my record player wire came unhinged, and I never heard the stereo version until I got new turntables a few years later.
  7:49pm
Dean:

Of the three, Bowie is the transcendent one. His work needn't "hold up" because while I never got into it--I have precisely two Bowie records, Stage and David Live--I always recognized his massive talent. I've had to cultivate over the years my love for Fairport and Sandy, albeit with little trouble. Pink Floyd, on the other hand... To my ear their best work is Meddle and a relatively unknown document about lunar eclipse. I attribute this in part to having seen the movie from Pompeii, which bored the daylights out of me, if you'll pardon the expression.
  7:51pm
Linda Lee:

so glad to hear you tonight, Irene! what a beautiful show. thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Irene Trudel:

Oh that's so funny, northguineahills! A lot of the records I bought early I didn't hear in stereo because my parents only had a "hi-fi" with a large single no-name speaker. It was placed in a corner of our living room, which had a high ceiling and gave it a big sound, so i didn't really know what I was missing until I could afford to buy my own my senior year of HS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks so much, Linda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
northguineahills:

In a Sailor's Life, I always wondered how someone's father w/ enough money to buy/build a Queen's ship would allow his daughter to be in a relationship w/ a sailor. This takes place in Victorian Britain after all....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Julie:

Sometime in the mid 80s I found the Barrett/Madcap two record set, and I hadn't heard the Barrett Pink Floyd. When I found out the connection I assumed he was long dead because I'd never heard of him and there were no records from him after that.
  8:01pm
wayne:

great show, Irene! Three of my favorites! Thanks for bringing it to us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm
northguineahills:

Well, this show will be easy, every track already pre-clicky-starred....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
doctorjazz:

I discovered then fairly late too. I knew of Fairport, but didn't get into them until the 80s, when I fell in love with Richard and Kinda Thompson, and worked backwards the Fairport. Bowie was always around, but in High School I was more into Grateful Dead, The Band, Dylan, Bowie was so Glam... Sort of back tracked to him through Lou Reed/Velvet Underground. And Dark Side of the Moon was ubiquitous when of came out, spent many hazy hours in friend's basements with it on. But I still really haven't really gotten into them. And think I can live without Roger Waters...

good evening Irene, and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks wayne! Hi coelacanth! doctorjazz, I really loved early Pink Floyd. Stuck with them up through Wish You Were Here, but I think they became a different band which was not appealing to me at all. I hated The Wall and pretty much haven't looked back since.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
doctorjazz:

The Barrett is really nice, someone else to catch up with...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Julie:

I feel like Floyd is several different bands
  8:12pm
Dean:

I had to sell The Wall, which accounts in part for my distaste for it. However, unlike other records I had to sell--Boston, Queen, Bob Seger, etc.--I've never come around to The Wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
coelacanth∅:

Irene i like animals too. i called pink floyd my favorite band at the time (not because of animals, but including it)
when the wall came out i completely wrote them off off and, as you did, never looked back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Julie:

I STILL can't get into Animals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm

Fotheringay is such a fantastic record
  8:18pm
Linda Lee:

my gosh what a beautiful show. again! thank you! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
northguineahills:

I lent my Fotheringay to a friend, and never got it back.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
coelacanth∅:

animals is far from their best, but there's substance there. the songs linger too long - though not to nearly as boring an end as with the wall. they should've come up with 2 more different songs and trimmed the 3 they had.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

Animals is where I felt Pink Floyd turned. Not my fave.
