Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Is this disco? It sounds like a human drummer.

"Ring My Bell" should be the name of some basement porno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 7/12/19 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

Lots and lots of human drummers in disco. Drum machines came into vogue in the early '80s.
  Fri. 7/12/19 12:22pm Listener Gregory:

My problems with disco relate primarily to the incessant, robotic bass drum in some songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/12/19 12:23pm Lewis:

As with many genres, the stuff that stands the test of time can be quite good (even with robotic bass lines... ;-) )

I loved both disco & "rock" back in the day. Disco has a LOT of stone jams.
  Fri. 7/12/19 12:26pm Listener Gregory:

20 years later, I realized that I liked some disco songs. Like every genre, some truly awful songs were hits. I think I overgeneralized from those.

Have to leave now, but recommend the Sonny Rollins song "Disco Monk," which alternates disco sections with free playing.

So, I actually liked disco, have a pile of 12 inch singles (Many played here). Soul had died out at that point, most of that style of singing went to disco. (Liked punk/New Wave too...seemed you had to take sides then...)

I'm too young to have experienced the rise and fall of disco, but my impression is that it was kind of like country music today. The lame stuff is SO bad and SO inescapable that a lot of casual listeners don't know the real stuff even exists.

Avatar Fri. 7/12/19 1:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Good point, Oscar. But I'll add this before I go deal with my loony mother. It's always easy to dismiss other peoples mindless pleasure and give your own to much importance. Music should be about pleasure. If it isn't, maybe you should spent your leisure time reading about politics.

I'm getting very warm & fuzzy vibes from this set. 1979 was such a great year musically for me.
  Fri. 7/12/19 2:31pm Dean:

A fad, absolutely. Seems like every major release had to have a picture disc issue. Then there was Devo's first album, which was released in the UK (perhaps before the domestic release) on five or six different colors of vinyl. Buddy of mine acquired 'em all.

What year was that Disco Star Wars tune popular?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/12/19 2:44pm The Oscar:

I was going to say, anyone who still thinks disco sucks clearly doesn't listen to Duane Train.

I had the impression that the whole disco fad had passed by 1979. I guess not.

Yep..."will it blend".
  Fri. 7/12/19 2:51pm Dean:

Nice coincidence: I was wondering what, if anything, Richard Meltzer had written about disco. Ran a search. The first result I viewed was a tribute posted by Bonomo shortly after Meltzer turned 70. No mention of disco, though.
