Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that's an awful lot girl
And now, now you've gone away
And all I'm trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you

I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He's way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you

Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you

i paid for culture, somewhere in nyc. we were one row of people from the stage and a group of large, elaborately adorned, beautiful brown women were in front of us yelling "Jah! rasta far i" like they were possessed...which i guess they were.

Lee Scratch Perry was among the most boring shows i've been to...with so, so much potential to be one of the best.
at least 2/3 him babbling his special brand of nonsense; < 1/3 music, which was lacklustre probably because the band was so bored of his nonsense.

  Fri. 12/7/18 1:36pm Dean:

Belafonte's Carnegie Hall record is one of those de rigueur LPs, like Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat, for audiophiles, regardless of whether the music is to one's taste. Supposedly, on a decent system you can hear the subways running under the hall. I've never bothered to check. But I do remember hearing Mingus Big Band at Fez under Time Cafe long ago. You could feel and hear the subway trains rumbling by.

I can't figure out whether or not Fountains of Wayne intended the protagonist of "This better Be Good" to come off as a self-absorbed dick, but I certainly think he does. Every time I hear this song, I'm rooting for the girl to say "You know what? Fuck this, we're through."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Fountain's of Wayne have the protagonist point his weapon at himself?! Forfend.
  Fri. 12/7/18 1:49pm dan:

UM, you must be the first DJ in history to go from The Raspberries to Fountains Of Wayne all the way to Benny Goodman, all in the same set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 1:51pm Parq:

Yeah, I know, but at the end of the day they're guys, know what I mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 1:53pm Jeff Golick:

@UM, as my avatar states, I go with everything.
  Fri. 12/7/18 1:54pm dan:

One of the girls in The Cake married Chris Wood from Traffic.
  Fri. 12/7/18 1:55pm Dean:

I wonder if The Cake have ever played at MacArthur Park and, if so, was it raining?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 1:56pm coelacanth∅:

haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:04pm Jeff Golick:

Yes that was really melancholy music. I thought you were about to do a dead dog dedication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:06pm Asheville Jon:

UM!!!!!! just poppin in to say hi, been enjoying the show. gotta run and get the kids at school. see ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 12/7/18 2:12pm rw:

That was a good segue
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

I like this seque!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:15pm Parq:

UM, I'm relieved to hear that you find the sarcastic edge of that song so clear-cut, I really am. I grew up with guys like the one in that song, and still work with many such guys, and I honestly don't know what's considered obviously over the top nowadays.
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:15pm rw:

Agreed. Keep em coming! But I just got to work. Have a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:15pm burke:

It's raining real hard in Austin, TX today where I am and this is exactly the correct song for my current environment
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:17pm Dean:

Hey, Noam Chomsky turned 90 today. Happy birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

I consent to that well-wish, Dean.
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:20pm Dean:

When we first hired our nanny/babysitter/whatever, she cared for our son and Noam's grandson. Kinda cool. Now our son, heading toward his 'teens, bumps into the nanny at Starbucks now and then.
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:22pm Dean:

I'm always tickled by the recurring "unk." in Unkle Michael's playlist.

It's Dr. Robotnik
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Better Long John Baldry than Bald John Longry, I've always said.
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:31pm Dean:

Alongside a review in Billboard, April 26, 1975, of Don Reno et al. at NYU is a review of Manu Dibango at The Bottom Line. Opening act for Manu Dibango? Isotope with Gary Boyle. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

Doug, is this what they're paying you for?
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:32pm dan:

That's Elton John doing the piano on this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Wait, whut? I'm supposed to be getting paid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Forget I said a word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:38pm Parq:

I saw Long John Baldry wen he was touring to support It Aint Easy. I saw him at - I promise, this is true - a weekend-long fest that was raising money for charity, held in a mall parking lot that was a bike ride way from my house in Paramus NJ.
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:39pm Dean:

Here's the poop on the Don Reno track: https://www.ibiblio.org/hillwilliam/BGdiscography/?v=fullrecord&albumid=17279

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:40pm annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:42pm Jeff Golick:

This is like the "Tinker to Evers to Chance" of seques.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:43pm Uncle Michael:

It surely is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:43pm annie:

Annie Ross played Darryl Hannah's mom in"Short Cuts"..a great movie, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:44pm coelacanth∅:

by the way i wasn't requesting that Charlie Rich song i just thought it'd be a good segue then, and that opportunity's behind us
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:44pm dan:

@Annie Probably Robert Altman's magnum opus along with Nashville. And Lori Singer was the daughter, not Daryl Hannah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:45pm annie:

really??? the cello-toting blonde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:45pm Jeff Golick:

(Admittedly, Lori Singer looks *a LOT* like Daryl Hannah in that movie.)
  Fri. 12/7/18 2:46pm dan:

@Annie
Not only that, that's her playing the cello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:46pm annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:49pm chresti:

Another movie I missed
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:49pm Brian in UK:

Saw Jon Hendricks at the National Jazz and Blues Festival Auguat '69, same weekend as Charlie Manson did his worst. He was scat singing with Yes' Jon Anderson for a couple of numbers. Strange but true. The Who topped the bill two weeks before Woodstock. They were wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:50pm Jeff Golick:

Pardon this inside baseball, but I find this fascinating: "Tinker and Evers feuded for many years. On September 14, 1905, Tinker and Evers engaged in a fistfight on the field because Evers had taken a cab to the stadium and left his teammates behind in the hotel lobby. They did not speak for years following this event. According to some tellings, Tinker and Evers did not speak to one another again following their fight for 33 years, until they were asked to participate in the radio broadcast of the 1938 World Series, between the Cubs and the New York Yankees. Neither Tinker nor Evers knew the other had been invited."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:50pm chresti:

I guess her and Neil Young tied the knot (Hannah)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:52pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:56pm coelacanth∅:

i guess Daryl knew what she was getting into; Neil's been quite forthright about his romances taking a backseat to his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:56pm chresti:

Carrying on the tradition of infamy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:57pm annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 12/7/18 2:58pm coelacanth∅:
