Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 12:42pm still b/p:

First bought on my own I believe were Led Zeppelin 1 and Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, purchased at same time, almost entirely at the urging of a friend, not because of my own full-fleshed or full-fan familiarity at the time. Mom scowled and berated -- she knew nothing of the bands or music, but knew it was all unsuitable, baaaad,
  Fri. 2/9/18 12:42pm queems:

mine were cds because i’m young but uhh weird al’s greatest hits, tubthumper by chumbawumba, and middle of nowhere by hanson. it was the 90s, i don’t know

Agreed, though. She has such facility with voice-as-instrument, like, among men, Kurt Elling. Scary beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 12:47pm Sem!:

Ah, first album was a copy of Sgt. Peppers I recorded off a pair of speakers to a five inch reel to reel tape. My first album was a Ravi Shankar offering, after that was Weasels Ripped My Flesh. Then a big bunch of Firesign records.

What was that mail order record club, where you first get a few albums free, then you have to buy one every month or they send you one that you might not want?

That was my first record buying. I am pretty sure Bachman Turner Overdrive was in there.

Later, I discovered local records stores sold records at lower prices.

a lot of my first album buys were on cassette. Cassette was king in the late 70s/early 80s for me. I don't think I owned a record player of my own until I was in high school and got my older sister's as a hand-me-down.
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 12:52pm still b/p:

I've heard Bacharach told Dionne Warwick he wanted her voice to sound like an instrument in phrasing and precision. I'm assuming no one told McRae that's how she "should" do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 12:53pm Rich in Washington:

Alex in Illinois: one of them was Columbia House. My brother and I signed up and got lots of records and tapes until our mom got fed up with the bill and sent them a threatening letter.
It was really kind of a silly ripoff aimed at people with really indiscriminate musical taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 12:54pm listener Rey:

My first 3 records were 45s from Woolworth's. Band of Gold, Signed Sealed Delivered and Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. Don't remember what 2 & 3 were, but my 1st album was Mongo Santamaria Live at Yankee Stadium

Columbia House was the one. They would get kids under the age of 10 signed up. When my musical taste changed, they did not have any records by the Ramones or B-52s or Devo. When I got out of it, they charged me $15.00.

The Residents kinda/sorta covered R9.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

@Jeff, Quincy can blow me.
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:24pm queems:

HA
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:26pm Dean:

I must weep gently. Gotta head to a day-long meeting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

archives, Dean...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:28pm Jeff Golick:

!!! "[Rankin's] cover of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' was so much beloved by George Harrison that his family chose it for George's memorial service."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:29pm gloomsday:

that's beautiful! thanks for sharing that, jeff.
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 1:30pm ndbob:

woah Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:31pm Jeff Golick:

...if true. Wiki not always so dependable.

Wasn't familiar with Little David records. Looked it up: "formed in 1969 by comedian Flip Wilson (named after his son). Wilson sold the label to comedian George Carlin in the mid-70's..."

Wonders never cease.
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:32pm frenchee:

"The Breeders' cover of Happiness Is a Warm Gun" was so beloved by Frenchee that ... well let's not get ahead of ourselves...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:32pm Listening Out There:

Any of Little David's profits likely went up Carlin's nose...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:33pm Uncle Michael:

L.O.T.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:34pm Listening Out There:

What can I say, I took a wrong turn...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:35pm Roberto:

The piano intro to Martha My Dear always made me feel better after a crappy day at school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:36pm doctorjazz:

Set getting weird, which is much fun!
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:36pm frenchee:

And then there's Alex C. Lord. You're trying to kill me, UM, but I die happy.
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:37pm davefromtoronto:

sorry but what's up with that drummer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

(ringo?)

Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:38pm Jeff Golick:

No one can do a piss-take like AC.
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:38pm davefromtoronto:

ah that explains it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:39pm Webhamster Henry:

Did you ever hear CCC's Feeling Prudence's Babas, a mashup of Dear Prudence, More Than A Feeling, and Baba O'Reilly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:42pm Listening Out There:

Someone probably already pointed out that Lennon wrote Dear Prudence for Mia Farrow's sister. During the Beatles' visit to the Maharishi, she would not leave her cabin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:46pm Rich in Washington:

I recently found this record. It's amazing!
  Fri. 2/9/18 1:46pm davefromtoronto:

great idea UM but good luck finding a cover of Revolution #9
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:47pm Webhamster Henry:

R#9 has been done live recently, I forget who did it though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:48pm Jeff Golick:

omg
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:50pm Webhamster Henry:

This set is so WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:50pm Rich in Washington:

Laibach's uh, covering of Let It Be is pretty hilarious. Only wished they'd taken a crack at the title track. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

I'm surprised we can't hear a lyric sheet rustling in Lena's hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:52pm Rich in Washington:

hey, late 60s/early 70s were hard on older acts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:52pm Lewis:

marathon premium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

Too late, Lewis.

Lewis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:53pm Jeff Golick:

ha. That was quite a nice drop in on this Don't Pass Me By.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:53pm doctorjazz:

This Georgia Satellites cover is really fine! Fun set-making a killer office day go better, thanks UM!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:53pm Listening Out There:

Good look trying to do a premium. I understand getting Lennon/McCartney rights is a b****...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:55pm annie:

i'm waiting to hear revolution number nine
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 1:56pm ndbob:

Hi Annie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:56pm Roberto:

There's NO WAY we're going to hear a cover of Revolution #9. NO WAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

there's no way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:57pm Rich in Washington:

Oh god. Lydia! This track kills! I had nearly forgotten about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 1:58pm annie:

hi ndbob, i've been reading and listening from afar..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:01pm listener Rey:

This reminds me of when a couple of fifth-grade friends and I went over to listen to the White Album at one of our Jehovah's Witness friend's home. We brought our own portable turntable because music was not allowed in that household. Why Don't We Do it In the Road was especially illicit in that setting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:02pm annie:

i really love this song..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:03pm Rich in Washington:

I love this track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:04pm Rich in Washington:

This is such an epic set, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:07pm Roberto:

Agghhhh we haven't even gotten to side 3 yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:10pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Unc...You're doing a good thing...a very, very good thing!
FYI, Kenny Rankin's "My Guitar..." received a lot of FM airplay in the day, if I remember correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

Kevin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:12pm Rich in Washington:

Every time I hear Birthday, I hear the whacked out version that Eugene Chadbourne and John Zorn did on the infamous Beatles Medley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

Damn. I should have played the Rack-a-fire Explosion version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:12pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Can't wait to hear a cover of #9.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

We're gonna run long today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:15pm doctorjazz:

OK, getting out of here, bring you along in the car, Bye all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 2/9/18 2:23pm davefromtoronto:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

it was...but just for a second
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:31pm Roberto:

Will this next one be a cover of Revolution #1 or Revolution?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:31pm Jeff Golick:

This is very engaging radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

That's an astute question.
  Fri. 2/9/18 2:33pm frenchee:

Oh shoot I missed Nilsson
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:35pm Webhamster Henry:

Harry Nillson did a big medley of Beatles tunes, that's what got their attention!
Years later, John & Harry screamed their voices out. John kind of recovered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:38pm Roberto:

No scream. Definitely Revolution #1.
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 2:38pm Matt in Nebraska:

I vote "Oh-bla-di Oh-bla-do" as worst Beatles song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

Coming up...the worst selection in today's show...but we all have senses of humor...right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

I liked when Laibach was asked why they chose to cover Let It Be in its entirety, they said because it's their worst album.
  Fri. 2/9/18 2:40pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:40pm Sem!:

Barclay lounger revolution.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Eyes on the road, Doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:48pm Jeff Golick:

I always found Cry to be a very good "lesser known" Beatles song.
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 2:48pm ndbob:

excellent show UM - I need to go - good being here again
Avatar Fri. 2/9/18 2:49pm ndbob:

I never doubted you'd find a cover of Revolution Number 9. Kinda cool actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:53pm Webhamster Henry:

I guess this is the performance I heard about!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

I presume so, Henry.

Sweet dreams, all. See ya next time UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:59pm Listening Out There:

I think much of original Revolution #9 was whatever random tapes that George Martin could find at Abbey Road...and McCartney had been listening to Stockhausen...
  Fri. 2/9/18 2:59pm frenchee:

indeed, you've outdone yourself...this week! thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 2:59pm Listening Out There:

Great round of "White, White, Don't Tell Me."
  Fri. 2/9/18 3:03pm Sean B.:

I would say this John Lennon composition = Goodnight = Probably the classiest Beatles song ever put on Wax. A perfect example of Why Paul worshiped the ground that John walked on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/9/18 3:03pm Sem!:

It's Dame Vera. And will turn 100 in March.
