WFMU DJ Premiums
Loony tunes from Doug Schulkind's 2005 premium. From the original liner notes: "Loony Tunes" reveals that, right up there with love, sex and death, insanity is among the most enduring—and entertaining—themes in popular music. The idea for such a collection originated with "Madness in Opera," a sampler of tormented arias released in 1976 as part of a promotional blitz for Loxitane, a new schizophrenia treatment from Lederle Laboratories. No psychopharmaceuticals are included with this compilation, but repeated listening just may produce similar results!" January 2008

In late January '07, station manager Ken issued a challenge to WFMU listeners: "The rules are simple: take any 'known' song (whatever that means, I know, I know...) and reduce it to sixty seconds or less. Extra credit for reducing extra long songs." Out of an astounding 450 submissions, these are the forty finalists. For the full story and other notable submissions, check out Ken's blog post. May 2007
Dave the Spazz's premium for the 1994 WFMU marathon. "A microphone pointed in the general direction of a TV set unspooling videotaped Shemp-era Three Stooges two-reelers, quarter-inch reel-to-reel Ampex tape running down the hallway at seven and a half inches per second--Mousetrap-like, speeding past pencils sticking out of thread spools held down to the floor with duct tape, bounced into two reverb guitar pedals, ricocheted into a Radio Shack 4-track mixer and then knocked back into the Old Man's reel-to-reel Sony Furshluginner from Nineteen-fifty-something." Here's the second installment of Ergo Phizmiz' continuing series of MP3 albums based on the last ten weeks of the best mixes from his weekly show The Phuj Phactory, Release February 13, 2007. Album Artwork (jpeg) available here. February 2007
One of my favourite poets, the poet-laureate of appalling verse, but I find appalling more appealing than, say, Wordsworth. This is the Kings Singers doing Loch Lomond, collaged with an accordion version of Erik Satie's Gnossienne No 1, with a little interjection from a Scotsman talking about fossils. February 2007
Spike Jones' Black Bottom (the song, not actually his dark hued buttocks), collaged with the mysterious Paul Lowry tape, and multiple versions of Maple Leaf Rag, then a few other things besides. February 2007
A Phun Size Phuj mash-up of various elements of the related Phuj Phactory broadcast. Incorporating Johann Georg Albrechtsberger's Jew's Harp Concerto, the Blue Parrots' One Note Samba, Carl Stalling, Erik Satie/Willem Breuker, and more odds and sods from throughout the show. February 2007
The episode was a demonstration of what happens if you get drunk with some artists and talk about food. Ahem. This section incorporated Peter Sellers, Lionel Bart, Julie Andrews, the New Beats, Eloise Trio, and The Wiggles. February 2007
A tribute of sorts to a nipple-rubbing, bottom-spanking dance performed by comedian Rich Fulcher in a UK TV show called The Mighty Boosh. 10CC collaged with disco Beethoven. February 2007
A remarkable piece of music by Asa Chang and Junray, collaged with various beats from a Music of India 12 inch. With a bit of Spike Jones' Laura thrown in for good measure. February 2007
Much of the mixing in Phuj Phactory is sort of improvisational and stream-of-consciousness. This is one of my favourite bits. Renaldo & the Loaf, mixed with Kecak, mixed with Tomita doing Stravinsky's Firebird, segueing into and then mixing with Can's Moonshake. February 2007
An extract from the Christmas episode, in which it transpired that if you fragment Charles Dickens a bit it starts to sound like Samuel Beckett. With added Wham! February 2007
The James Bond theme, Allen Ginsberg doing William Blake, Lee Scratch Perry, and so on. February 2007
A podcast about the life of Frank Sinatra, mixed with Sting & The Police. I had lots of fun editing The Police to the rhythm of the text. Which is one way to pass the time of day when it's raining outside. February 2007
My favourite bit of 'pure' mash-up in the whole of the series so far. Both sounds here are completely unedited and unprocessed, just slapped over the top of each other and they work a treat. It's Mario Lanza singing Guardian Angels over the top of a piece of Latin music called Brasil Fusion (for which I couldn't find the artist name). February 2007
Multiple versions of the Gershwin track Our Love Is Here to Stay. February 2007
UK comedians The Two Ronnies collaged with Harpo Marx, and a BBC announcer collaged with the Swingle Singers. But not necessarily in that order. February 2007
A mix of sections from the Sounds of Soviet Animation show. February 2007
This is what you get if you mix Spike Jones with a Velvet Underground demo. February 2007

From Monica's (2005) DJ Compilation. A sassy stash of 60s and 70s soul sisters bust out the baddest and bitchiest man-eating monologues, raunchy raps and "tell it like it is" tracks. Dedicated to the fine art of homewreckin', heartbreakin', and all other manner of down low drama. Let the door knob hit ya where the good lord split ya. January 2007
Produced by the one and only Steinski. January 2007
