A new set begins: All welcome & hail Don Preston!!
Comment: Don Preston was perhaps best known as keyboardist & electronic noisemaker in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. He was the mad scientist mixing vile foaming liquids in '200 Motels'; he was the title character of Zappa's album & film 'Uncle Meat'. He played a mini-moog solo on 'Waka / Jawaka' that prompted Bob Moog himself to say 'that's impossible!' His best-known phrase was 'we must progress!'Well, that's all I ever knew about him. Tonight, we learned far more. Did you know, f'rinstance? :* he played for many years with Carla & Paul Bley.* he was largely responsible for John Coltrane abandoning be-bop (Progress!!)* he played & recorded with The Residents* he composed the music for gorefest 'Blood Diner'* he performed with John Lennon & Yoko Ono* he was Leo Sayers' musical director!! (??)Indeed, it's all true! Many shockers were revealed tonight, along with some first-hand insights into being A Real Live Mother of Invention and inspiring youth revolution in Eastern Europe (remember The Plastic People! remember Vaclev Havel!)Ah, but there's more... Don has graced us on this evening with a spontaneous improvised piece of electronic music, performed on a laptop, a parameter fucker-upper called the Chaos Box - and my favorite, an EMS SYNTHI-A!!!Also, we played a bunch of songs Don has recorded. Witness:
Don Preston Trio Walking Battery Woman Transformation
Leo Sayer I Am The Walrus V/a All This & WW2 sdtk
Lee Ranaldo Isolation Amarillo Ramp
Comment: And more chat with our guest Don Preston - including some truly horrifying revelations about what schoolkids were really learning about in the mid-1940s!
