News From the Freeform Front

Remembering Brian Wilson

On June 11th, the passing of Brian Wilson, the architect of the Beach Boys‘ sound and one of the most admired and influential figures in pop music history, inspired many WFMU DJs to pay tribute. The first show to announce the news was Nazario Scenario; afterwards, several DJs devoted large portions of their entire shows to remembering Mr. Wilson, including Dave the Spazz (who also highlighted Sly Stone, with special guests Dennis Diken and DA the DJ), Explorer’s Room, Acid Jazz Hands, Burn It Down!, Michael Shelley, Joe Belock (who mounted two specials, one on Three Chord Monte and a second on Shakin’ Street), and many more: Tony Coulter, The Frow Show, Where the Action Is, Big Planet Noise (also featuring Sly Stone), Bob Brainen, Irene Trudel, both the Orange Peel Boutique and Orange Peel Hour, Ken, and Cherry Blossom Clinic. Many other DJs played a few songs, so check out the archives between June 11th and June 18th for even more remembrances of the man whose recorded legacy represents such a rich vein of American music.

John Schnall at Monty Hall

Escape the heat and come on down to Monty Hall on Thursday, June 26th for a special night dedicated to the work of John Schnall, animator and long-time WFMU DJ. The program will feature Death Laughs Among Us, a collection of John’s animated shorts; an hour-long documentary about John and his work, Quality Schnallity, by Dan Kinem and Levi Peretic; and a live, in-person discussion with Dan, Levi, and John. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Get your tickets at the door or buy in advance here.

Summer Program Schedule Has Begun!

Twice a year, WFMU shakes up its programming schedule to keep things lively at Ol’ Monty. Our new Summer Schedule kicks off on Mon, June 9th and continues until Mon, September 8th. Many DJs have stayed put, some have moved to different times, others have taken a break, and several new DJs have been introduced into the WFMU radio bloodstream. Check out the new schedule here.

Marathon Swag is a Comin’

Some of you have received your swag by now, but there are a bunch of you that we still need to get to. The biggest packages sometimes take the longest to get out the door, but they do always taste the sweetest. If you haven’t received yours yet, hang in there a bit longer, we’re a tiny operation chuggin’ along. It should be on its way soon! Should you have any questions about your pledge, feel free to drop Listener Services Director Joe McGasko an e-mail at: pledge@wfmu.org.
