Composer Phillip Johnston visited me at the new WFMU studios in Jersey City to talk about and play some music from his first album with the Transparent Quartet, "The Needless Kiss." The Transparent Quartet was celebrating the album's release with a performance at The Knitting Factory that evening. In addition to leader Phillip Johnston (soprano/alto sax), the Transparent Quartet includes Joe Ruddick (piano/baritone sax, and composer of some of their tunes), Dave Hofstra (bass), and Mark Josefsberg (vibraphone). The Transparent Quartet also appears on WFMU's latest compilation, "Live Music from a Dead Campus."
